Rowan University Student Government Association (SGA) Assistant Vice President of Facilities and Operations Samuel Duren announced a proposal for renovations to Wilson Hall during Monday night’s meeting in the Chamberlain Student Center’s Eynon Ballroom.

Adjacent to Pfleeger Concert Hall stands a cement, walled in outdoor seating area that, in Duren’s opinion, is unsightly and could be changed for better use.

“We saw what was happening around campus. The Robinson circle was redone, so what is next,” said Duren. “It was clear to me and I felt that, that area needed to be renovated.”

Duren’s facilities committee has met with the Senior Vice President for Facilities and Operations Donald Moore to look into the feasibility of either expanding Wilson Hall, or creating a new outdoor atmosphere. Duren’s committee drew up a preliminary sketch of a multipurpose area, which includes an outdoor performance area for students, and a seating area that could possibly be used during commencement.

“It’s nothing set in stone yet, I was just trying to get their minds wrapped around [the idea] that we want to change something else and they completely agree with me, too,” said Duren.

The senate also approved $2,320.78 of supplemental funding during Monday night’s meeting. SGA disperses funding on an annual basis to petitioned clubs as part of their yearly budgets. Clubs are also able to petition for additional money, due to emergent or unforeseen expenses in the club’s yearly budget. Rowan University’s student branch of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), Student Organization for Caribbean Awareness, Victim Awareness Club and Gamma Chi Sigma were all approved for additional funding for various events or projects by the Senate.

Rowan University’s arm of the IEEE will be hosting it’s first annual Hackathon on Mar. 12 in the Rowan Hall. The Hackathon is a 24-hour competition with 65, registered Rowan Students, all competing for prizes. The goal of the competition is to create a type of interesting hardware or software project within the 24-hour time period. These technology projects range from websites, to apps and even drone projects. A Hackathon may come with a negative connotation, but the club assures attendants that the name is derived from hacking technological elements together to create a project.

Three academic senator positions for the colleges of Performing Arts, Sciences and Mathematics and Business were also filled. Junior, theater major Ileana Fortuno was elected Academic Senator for the College of Performing Arts; freshman, accounting major Shivani Shah was elected Academic Senator for the Rohrer College of Business; and first year transfer, biochemistry major Alamzeb Khan was elected Academic Senator for the College of Science and Mathematics.

SGA will meet again on Monday, Feb. 29 at 7 p.m. in the Chamberlain Student Center’s Eynon Ballroom.
