Walk Like a Prof, held at the Recreation Center on Friday, was an event that supported National Girls and Women in Sports Day, a celebration started by the Women’s Sports Foundation. This foundation inspires girls and women to play, be active and realize their full power.

“I’ve supported Walk Like a Prof in the past. I’ve always participated and, because it is an initiative supporting women in sports, I thought, what a perfect pairing, so I wanted to come out and support it,” Carol Primas-Young, a faculty member from strategic planning and management who attended the event said.

National Girls & Women in Sports Day is a celebration for those who advocate for and protect Title IX and advance gender equality, athletes who help to inspire greatness and professionals who work to promote playing sports.

“I think it’s important to support these types of events. I grew up playing sports and it really helped me and my development, so I hope that other women and girls have the same opportunities and continue to take advantage of these events,” Katie Huber, the assistant director for fitness and wellness at the Rec Center said.

An event like this is important because it not only supports National Girls and Women in Sports Day, it provides students the opportunity to get healthy and connect with others. Amanda Ciavarella, the digital strategy and communications specialist for strategic planning and management, is very passionate about students participating in physical activities.

“Physical activity is beneficial in so many ways. Not only are we taking care of our physical selves when we take a walking break at work but walking also benefits so many other aspects of our wellbeing,” Ciavarella said.

The committee that sponsors the event is composed of departments on campus, such as Student Affairs, Campus Recreation, Center for Sports Communication and Social Impact, Rowan Athletics and the Social Justice, Inclusion and Conflict Resolution office (SJICR). The Women’s and Gender Studies department leads the committee.
