Editor’s Note: This letter is written by current members of SGA in response to a Feb. 12 editorial written by the entire Whit staff.

Digital media has grown quickly throughout the years and with great success. However, with success there tends to be misconceptions. With readers wanting their news fast and at the same moment, information tends to get mixed up and pushed out too quickly.

Rowan University’s Student Government Association understands this. Although miscommunication upsets us, we want to see it as motivation to increase open communication in a mutually beneficial way. So, take a moment and bear with us as we clarify some things.

An important philanthropic cause we would like to clarify is the Senior Class Gift. The Senior Class Gift is an optional donation for graduating seniors to benefit the incoming freshman class. This gift goes towards scholarships for incoming Rowan family members.

Although seniors won’t be there to see their donations’ impact, their legacy will be marked on Rowan’s campus. Any amount can be collected, however a donation of $20.20 will make seniors eligible for a spirit cord to be worn at commencement and makes an impact on a new member of our family.

Of course, we understand the financial struggles that come with college. We would never want to pressure students to put others’ needs before their own.

Our executive board strives to help with affordability issues that take place on campus, such as the new “Food for Fines” program that gives students the opportunity to relieve some of their monetary parking fines with food donations. SGA is proud of this program as it helps two students at once, the student with the fine and the student who benefits from that donation.

Board members also sit on the Affordability Task Force committee with the administration. As part of our student leader positions, we speak on behalf of students, to ensure that they are heard and get the best deal out of their education.

We encourage students to visit us in the SGA office, located on the first floor of the Student Center, or at Senate which takes place every other Monday at 7 p.m.. We want to hear your concerns because we care for each and every one of you.

We are so grateful for our fellow students who are so dedicated to their academic success as well as their commitment to extracurricular activities. The Whit staff is full of promising writers and journalists who will go on to cover the news stories of tomorrow. We would like to thank them for giving us this opportunity to clarify some misconceptions. We wish them nothing but luck and success in their future endeavors.
