Another day, another win for the women’s soccer team. The Profs rolled against Kean University on Saturday, recording yet another shutout with a 5-0 victory. Five different players scored, with two sharing the same first name. Freshman midfielder Lauren Wood and senior forward Lauren Coletti scored the team’s two goals in the second half.
Shannon Reardigan, senior forward out of Glassboro, was New Jersey Athletic Conference “Player of the Week” two weeks ago after netting three goals in just two games, one proving to be the game winner against Arcadia.
“I think it’s really big for our team having someone from our team represent,” Reardigan said. “I think we’re all pretty excited about it. It’s a good season.”
Head coach Scott Leacott acknowledged the accomplishment by pointing out Reardigan’s effort on the field.
“It’s good for her, she works extremely hard and does the things right in practice and gets awarded out on the field,” Leacott said.
To both Leacott and Reardigan, it isn’t about the individual, but the team as a whole.
“We all know it’s not about individual accolades,” Leacott said. “It takes everyone on our team to help her get that.”
Offense isn’t the only thing that wins games, as any good team will tell you. Rowan has tallied eight shutouts this year and are outscoring the opposition 26-2 on the year. Both of those conceded goals have come in the first half and both were on the road. To the Profs, every position serves an important purpose to the team.
“We have good athletes on the back line and an unbelievable goalkeeper,” Leacott said. “But it takes more than that. It takes all eleven people.”
This past week, that unbelievable goalkeeper Shelby Money, was named NJAC “Defensive Player of the Week.”
With three straight NJAC games coming up in the next week, Rowan looks to keep the momentum rolling and stay focused.
“Our whole philosophy is to always take it one game at a time,” Leacott said. “We haven’t even looked at anything but Eastern in the last couple of days. You start looking ahead and you get yourself in a little bit of trouble as far as not being focused and not being prepared.”
The team came out strong against Eastern University Wednesday night, winning their ninth-straight game 4-0. This is their ninth shutout of the year and their fifth in a row. Freshman back Kelsi Stangl began the scoring for the Profs at the 39-minute mark. Senior captain Melissa Kelly, junior forward Cathryn McCarry and junior midfielder Sarah Rosenberg collected a goal each in the second half.
Rowan travels to Montclair State University on Saturday. Kickoff is at 1 p.m.
