Out of nowhere, Week 7 of the NFL season has come and gone and we are almost halfway through the NFL season already.
This season has been nothing short of amazing, and every week we have been blessed with great NFL games throughout the entire slate. This week was no different.
Starting off in Denver on Thursday Night Football, the most notable news came from an injury rather than the actual game. Patrick Mahomes, the reigning MVP of the NFL, dislocated his knee on a one yard QB sneak and made the hearts of NFL fans sink to their feet.
Whether you root for the Kansas City Chiefs or not, seeing someone that talented and that transcendental going down is never a good thing. The good news is that the injury is not season-ending but he will still miss three to six weeks of the season.
Mahomes coming back is awesome news considering the severity of the injury and how amazing he is to watch. Hopefully he will be back by Week 12 or 13, just in time for the Chiefs to make a deep playoff run.
Other than that, this game was a snooze fest and the Denver Broncos fell flat at home. They even let Chiefs backup QB Matt Moore complete 10 passes for 117 yards and a touchdown as the Chiefs handled this one easily without their star quarterback 30-6.
Another notable game on the schedule was the 5-1 Green Bay Packers facing off versus the surprisingly competent Oakland Raiders at 3-2 fresh off a bye.
This game was close for the first quarter or so and then Aaron Rodgers started to take over. There has been a lot of discussion about Aaron Rodgers’ play this season even though the rest of the team is playing really well.
Well Aaron Rodgers decided he didn’t want to hear the talking anymore and had arguably the best game of his career. He posted the first perfect passer rating by a Packers QB ever, and ended the game with five passing touchdowns and one rushing TD. He went 25/31 with 429 yards without his best receiver Davante Adams as the Packers handled the Raiders 42-24.
After this game the Packers look like real contenders in the NFC.
Another game that I knew I was going to watch was St. Louis Cardinals versus New York Giants as the two rookie sensations Daniel Jones and Kyler Murray faced off for the first time in their young careers.
Throughout this entire game, the Giants continued to beat themselves with turnovers by their young rookie quarterback, and pretty horrible run defense.
Backup running back Chase Edmonds for the Cardinals managed to run for 126 yards and 3 touchdowns as David Johnson (who has been nursing an injury) watched from the bench.
With two minutes left, after all the mistakes by their defense and missteps by Kyler Murray, the Giants still had a chance to drive down the field down six points.
Unfortunately, Daniel Jones has continued to show that this is only his fifth NFL game, and couldn’t do anything on offense.
Kyler Murray didn’t play great throwing for only 104 yards and no touchdowns. But the Cardinals running game was dominant the entire game, as the Cardinals have won their third straight game with Kyler Murray and improve to 3-3-1 on the season as the Giants fall to 2-5, after getting a little bit of hope a few weeks ago in Tampa Bay. Final Score was 27-21 Cardinals.
And finally in the Sunday Night marquee matchup, the Birds came into Dallas looking for a much needed divisional win.
Both teams really needed this win, as both came into this game 3-3 and fighting for the NFC East title.
Earlier in the week, Coach Doug Pederson guaranteed a victory for the Philadelphia Eagles which is never the right route to go as a coach heading into a divisional rival matchup.
The Dallas Cowboys had dropped three straight going into this game and were just as desperate as the Eagles.
From the jump, this game seemed like it was over, as the Eagles won the coin toss and decided to take the ball first. On the first drive of the game tight end Dallas Goedert fumbled, and the Cowboys quickly cashed in with a touchdown.
On the Eagles’ next drive Carson Wentz proceeded to fumble, resulting in another quick touchdown for the Cowboys as the Eagles blinked and were down 14-0.
From that point, the Eagles defense could not stop anything as Dak Prescott and Ezekiel Elliot dominated in the air and on the ground.
Carson Wentz threw another pick and fumbled again, as the Eagles suffered an embarrassing blowout loss to their division rival.
At this point in the season, it is apparent that the Eagles problems lie within their defense, but if Carson Wentz isn’t on his A game, this will most likely continue to happen as their defense cannot stop anyone.
It’s hard to ask the offense to come back down multiple possessions every game, and the Eagles look like their division title hopes might be dying down quicker than they thought. It gets even worse for the Eagles as their next 4 games are against the Bills (5-1), Bears (3-3), Patriots (7-0), and the Seahawks (5-2). Things could get out of control fast if they don’t turn their team around now.
Other headlines:
- San Francisco 49ers and New England Patriots both won again, remaining the only two undefeated teams in the league.
- Miami Dolphins continued their tank for Tua Tagovailoa as they lost to the 5-1 Buffalo Bills who also look like a real contender.
- Indianapolis Colts took the lead in the AFC South over the Houston Texans after beating them on Sunday 30-23.
- The New England Saints and backup Teddy Bridgewater continue to thrive as they improved to 5-0 without star franchise QB Drew Brees, after defeating the Bears in Chicago 36-25.
After next week, we will be halfway through the NFL season, and even though I can’t wait for the games every week, I want it to slow down a little. The NFL is the gift that keeps giving, and hopefully next week is much of the same.
