After the devastation that Hurricane Ida brought to Gloucester County this past week, Rowan Athletics has made the decision to donate all ticket-sale proceeds from their home events this weekend to the Gloucester County Disaster Relief Fund by United Way of Gloucester County.

Wednesday, Ida hit New Jersey and left damage across many communities in Gloucester County.

After seeing the devastation, talks about how to help started the very next day, according to Rowan’s Athletic Director, Dr. John Giannini.

“We discussed it on Thursday,” Giannini said. “And after bringing it to other people on campus and informing them on what we wanted to do, it was a formal decision yesterday.”

Giannini went on to further explain how giving back to the community was something that Rowan Athletics is always trying to participate in by doing their part where they can.

“We are always a part of the community. Last year, our football team, in particular, and other teams were involved with feeding dozens of families in need of food during Covid,” Giannini said. “This is pretty much a regular instinct for Rowan Athletics. Things like team work and community and service are a part of athletic culture, so it’s a pretty natural thing.”

The ticket proceeds that will be donated to the Disaster Relief Fund are tickets to Rowan’s football game against Widener University on Saturday night and tickets to the the women’s soccer Profs Soccer Classic — taking place on both, Saturday and Sunday afternoon.

After the Saturday events alone, Rowan Athletics has already raised over $10,000 for the Disaster Relief Fund.
