On March 27 the Recreation Center held its annual Health and Wellness Fair for all of campus. At the fair, many vendors held different resources that fulfill the Rowan Strive to Thrive program.
Rowan Thrive is a framework that supports and grows students’ well-being to live a healthy lifestyle that meets all their personal needs to be independent. The six pieces of the framework are physical, social, emotional, community, purpose, and financial needs. The idea is to get students to practice and participate in the resources that the Rowan campus provides.
At the fair, the vendors ranged from Rec Center workout classes to medical facilities involving physical and mental wellness, as well as nutritional advice. Aside from Rowan-based services the fair also held space for Playa Bowls, spa-grade messages, and giving away succulent plants.
Kathleen Huber is an assistant of Fitness and Wellness with Campus Recreation, making her the coordinator for the event. She has worked at the Rowan Rec Center for 10 years and continues to provide students with resources.
“I always enjoy working with all the different departments and vendors,” said Huber. “We even have student clubs come and join in for the fair. I think it’s very important for all students to be involved with campus and it truly is amazing to work in an environment that puts that first.”
Ryan Ems, a 24-year-old Rowan grad student who is another assistant for Fitness and Wellness shared his thoughts about working the Health and Wellness Fair for the first time.
“I’m excited to see the different aspects that Rowan Thrive has to offer and it impresses me to see how it does help many students. I feel like this experience will help strengthen my goals to want to increase the Rowan community and make all students feel welcome here on campus,” said Ems.
Among the participants, some students engaged in the events and interacted with vendors.
One of those students was Michael Sanchez, an 18-year-old junior who is a law and justice major, who shared his experience participating in the Health and Wellness Fair.
“I’m always involved with the Rec Center in some capacity. I use the gym facilities here and I’m a part of a few intramural sports the Rec offers so I thought it would be good to get connected and informed with even more things Rowan has,” said Sanchez.
Another student at the event was Nina Stonitsch, a 21-year-old junior who is a mechanical engineering major.
“I come to the Rec Center to use the gym and the fitness group classes they have and that’s where I learned the fair was happening. I already have learned a few things that can help me practice good habits and I think more people should come and enjoy that,” said Stonitsch.
