Rowan women’s outdoor track and field hosted the ninth-annual Oscar Moore Invitational at Coach Richard Wackar Stadium in Glassboro, New Jersey, on Saturday, April 12, an event that also honored its teams’ seniors before the event. In addition, another group competed at the Bucknell Bison Outdoor Classic in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania, on Sunday, April 13.
While there was no team scoring at the meets, the Profs were able to see some improvements. Head coach Shedrick Elliot III was impressed with the team’s ability to adapt to the weather conditions.
“I felt like the squad that was here at our home meet was able to bear the horrible conditions, temperatures in the thirties,” said Elliot III.
A highlight of the day for the Profs was freshman Alaijha Wilson’s performance in the discus (35.68) as her third-place finish places her at No. 2 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC).
“I felt like Alaijha [Wilson] had a pretty solid day in the discus,” said Elliot.
At the Bucknell Bison Classic, the Profs represented extremely well in the 4×400 relay as seniors Molly Lodge, Nevaeh Lorjuste, Jasmine Broadway, and freshman Nyla Jones clocked a second-place finish (3:48.24).
Lodge, who was the leadoff leg for the relay, was extremely happy to get the team off to a great start.
“I’m the leadoff leg, so I’m always happy to get us out there, hopefully run a great pop off, but I was super happy that the relay performed as well as we did perform,” said Lodge.
Jones, who is the only freshman on the 4×400 relay team, had one motivation on her mind going into the meet.
“I can’t let the seniors down,” said Jones. “I had to run my hardest so I can keep them in a good position.”
Broadway, who was the third leg of the relay, felt rewarded to see her training pay off as she caught an illness twice throughout the indoor season.
“I thought I did really good, especially compared to indoor,” said Broadway. “I did get sick twice during the indoor season, so I wasn’t performing my best. So it was really nice to see that the work I’d been putting in over practice came to fruition at the meet.”
Lorjuste, who is the caboose of the relay, was impressed with all of the competition that Rowan faced at the Bucknell Bison Classic.
“Competing with Rochester, they are heavy competition,” said Lorjuste. “We knew that going in there, that we were gonna have competition, but honestly, we’re right with them. So there was nothing to be afraid of.”
The Profs will be back in action this weekend at the Paul Donohue Invitational in Chester, Pennsylvania, the Morgan State Legacy in Baltimore, Maryland, and the Johns Hopkins/Loyola Invitational also in Baltimore, Maryland.
