With a majority of The Whit Staff graduating this May, we have decided to dedicate this editorial to hearing one last message from our graduating seniors.
Sophia Fandino, Opinion Editor: Being a part of a student newspaper, more specifically the incredible Whit, has become the biggest highlight of my college experience. I never thought I’d find such a beautiful group of people in a tiny office located in Bozorth 108, but here I am. The impact this little Glassboro paper has had on me is immeasurable in words, I can only grow for here and that is all thanks to The Whit.
Madison Miller, Editor in Chief: The Whit is without a doubt the best thing I have done at Rowan University. Not only has it transformed me into the writer, journalist, and entrepreneur I am today, but it has made me an infinitely better person than I would have been otherwise. The Whit is, and will continue to be a part of me long after I leave our office in Bozorth 108.
Paige Britt, Features Editor: Being a part of a student newspaper has absolutely changed my life for the better. I have met my best friends in the whole world, become a stronger journalist, and a better storyteller. The lessons I’ve learned at The Whit will follow me for the rest of my life, and I have to credit all of my success to our newsroom and my fellow editors.
Claire McDermott, Copy Editor: Being a copy editor for The Whit has been one of the most rewarding things I’ve ever gotten to be a part of in my college career. Not only do I get to put the experience on my resume, but it has opened a whole new world of connections, friendships, and confidence in myself and my skill set that I never would have had without joining it because I’m not a journalism major. Being able to see what goes into a newspaper and all of the collaboration that goes into it was very special, and I’m grateful I got to be a part of it for my final year.
Tyler Delpercio, Sports Editor: Working on staff for a student newspaper has helped me not only grow as a writer and editor but a person as well. I’ve been able to work with a ton of incredible people over the course of my three years as editor and I’ve formed so many friendships as a result. These people have helped me a ton whether it be with writing, making pages or coming up with some more creative ideas as a whole and I’m glad I was able to be a part of something like this for as long as I was.
Rianna Moses, Copy Desk Chief: I thought I knew what being a journalist was like as I was taking my typical news reporting and digital journalism classes. However, I never got the true feeling of journalism until I joined The Whit two years ago. Putting together a newspaper every Wednesday has made me realize the confidence and strength needed in becoming a good reporter and just how crucial time can be when working with other staff writers and editors. Actively writing and copy editing has made me stay true to my passion and as staff, we are constantly learning through mistakes and change in opinions. Without The Whit, I wouldn’t be who I am today. The best part about it is that being a student journalist and experiencing more in the field not only makes you a better reporter and editor but pushes you to grow as a student and a person.
Nicholas Wiley, Managing Editor: Over my three years at The Whit, I’ve grown so much both personally and professionally. When I started, I was a shy and quiet person who often stayed in the background. Being part of the editorial staff helped me come out of my shell and gain more confidence in myself. I’ve learned how to lead, think critically under pressure, and contribute to something bigger than myself. This staff has been excellent, and I’m truly grateful for the experiences and friendships I’ve gained along the way.
