On Monday, Sept. 8, Rangeela, Rowan’s Bollywood fusion dance team, hosted an interest meeting and dance workshop in room 415 at Discovery Hall. The room was filled with students eager to learn more about the team, its mission, and what joining would look like this semester.
The evening began with introductions from current members who shared background information about the club, its executive board, and goals for the year. Rangeela’s mission is to expose individuals on campus to South Asian culture through dance, while also building a strong dance team that can represent Rowan University.
“I want people to understand the type of dance styles that we do,” said Anmol Patel, president and co-captain of Rangeela. “We have a variety. We’re not strictly traditional, we do everything, and we’re very cooperative and collaborative.”
During the presentation portion of the meeting, club members explained that their main focus for the semester will be competing in dance competitions, expanding their presence on campus, and in the region.
“Our goal this semester is to make our club bigger, participate in collegiate performances and competitions for South Jersey, and represent our school,” said Anmol Patel.
After the information session, Rangeela was taken into a dance workshop, where they taught the choreography that potential members will be evaluated on during tryouts later in the week. After everyone stretched and warmed up, the co-captains, Anmol Patel, Niva Shah, and Megan Thomas, began teaching the choreography, emphasizing the details to ensure everyone was confident in the moves. Everyone gave their full effort to perfect the routine.
Participants were encouraged to add their own pieces of choreography to their routine to better their chances at tryouts. Adding individual flair can help dancers stand out. Students embraced the challenge with enthusiasm and determination.
The night reflected more than just excitement about learning new things. Along with learning the choreography, participants enjoyed the chance to connect with each other. The event offered more than just dancing; it offered community.
“I love the choreo[graphy], and I love how easy it is to make friends,” said Manini Patel, a senior public health and wellness major.
For many, the workshop was just as much about the people as it was the dancing.
“I definitely love the people, the environment, and just being able to dance when I haven’t in a while,” said Nira Patel, a freshman biological science major.
“I’m excited to challenge myself, learn new dances, and meet more people,” said Nira Patel.
The night ended with reminders about upcoming opportunities to get involved in Rangeela. Tryouts for the dance team will be held on Friday, Sept. 12, and their first practice will be on Monday, Sept. 15. The team also hosts general workshops open to all every month, offering anyone on campus the chance to learn, dance, and experience South Asian culture.
