Rowan University police are investigating a shooting that left one person injured just steps away from the Rowan University sign early Sunday morning, according to NBC 10 Philadelphia and CBS News.
According to an email issued out to the community by Rowan University’s Police Department, the incident occurred shortly before 2 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 21. Local authorities said the victim was on the sidewalk just outside of Holly Pointe Commons residential hall when someone inside a vehicle opened fire, striking them.
The suspect’s car was last seen traveling west on Mulica Hill Rd. towards the traffic circle. The identity and condition of the victim have not been released yet. Investigators have not yet identified a suspect, though a gun and spent shell casings were recovered from the scene of the crime.
University officials were able to notify students through an internal alert system called Rowan Alerts shortly after the shooting. The alert issued at 2:39 a.m. read “Please stay clear of N. Main in the area of the Landmark while police investigate a setting that occurred off campus in the area.”
Although the incident happened off university property, its proximity to Holly Pointe Commons has unsettled many on campus. The residence hall, which houses more than 1,000 first-year students, sits on the edge of campus, near several busy roadways. The area is typically active at night on weekends as students return from studying, social events, or off-campus jobs.
The incident highlights ongoing concerns about student safety in neighborhoods surrounding the university. While campus police regularly patrol university property, off-campus streets are overseen by local authorities, which can be an added challenge in addressing safety beyond the borders of Rowan.
While investigators have not yet released a possible motive or said whether the shooting was targeted, police are asking anyone with information about the case to contact the Glassboro Police Department or the Gloucester County Prosecutor’s Office.
