“I do see myself really developing my company further. I want to use my art and the talents that I’ve been gifted with,” said Silva. (Carolina Silva)
Carolina Silva is a music industry student here at Rowan University who wants people to hear what she has to say. Silva recently transferred to Rowan in hopes of not only working on her musical voice but also her radio voice as well.
“I put a lot of love and effort into that [her show], and when an executive staff position opened, I just really wanted the one that would be the right fit for my passion for communications,” said Silva on her decision to run for public affairs director.
She started at Rowan Radio last year as a contributor and grew to have her own show the following semester. Silva’s show featured the musical hits of the 1980s and was played in the mornings for Rowan Radio’s thousands of listeners. She was then nominated to run for Public Affairs Director and won only one year into her career here at Rowan.
“As public affairs director, I am in charge of doing different interviews with different nonprofits across South Jersey. I am in charge of contacting those people and maybe even going to events in the area that could benefit the community,” said Silva on her role responsibilities.
Silva hopes that her work with Rowan Radio as public affairs director will bring a larger voice for nonprofits in the surrounding South Jersey area. It is important to Silva to have diversity within the people she is interviewing. She has been in touch with organizations such as Aquaponics, a program where sustainable agriculture using fish and water, as well as an organization called Holy Grounds, which St. John of God runs, that assists adults with special needs.
Silva plans to continue down this communications path post-graduation from Rowan. She already has her own company called Sound Media that she hopes to develop further. She is going to continue to work with the dance company where she started her audio journey as a sound engineer, and wants to explore her options when it comes to the field of communications, more specifically, radio.
“I do see myself really developing my company further. I want to use my art and the talents that I’ve been gifted with,” said Silva.
She hopes that people will learn from her story and will take every opportunity that is given to them. Networking with the people around her is what she credits a lot of her success to, as well as taking every leadership role she was able to build up her resume.
“Approach it [the work field] without fear, be bold, and look for opportunities. Do not wait until you graduate to start building your resume,” said Silva when asked about what advice she would give to young people looking to go into this field.
