Rowan men’s soccer left Wednesday night with a 1-1 draw versus Alvernia after leading by a goal heading into the final two minutes of play at the Rowan Soccer and Lacrosse Complex. The Profs are now 8-3-2 on the year, as their search for answers continues.
“No excuses, it’s just one of those days,” head coach Scott Baker said. “We took our chances, we were on the attack the whole game, [and it was an] unlucky night for us.”
Rowan was a dominant force throughout the first half, controlling possession and taking 20 shots total heading into the break. On the opposite side of things, no goals to show due to a strong performance from the Golden Wolves’ goalkeeper.
It wasn’t until the 53rd minute of the match when junior transfer, Luke McNamee, scored a goal in the bottom right corner of the net thanks to an ambitious left footed shot outside the 18 yard box. McNamee not only gave Rowan the 1-0 advantage, but he also scored his first in a Prof kit.
“The whole organization has been great to me,” McNamee said. “Just belief, and that’s what that goal was, it was just belief.”
With the result in Rowan’s favor, the Golden Wolves had other plans. As the match entered the 89th minute, team captain Greg Ferreira fouled an Alvernia player, receiving a yellow card and giving the opposition a free kick in the attacking third.
While the cross came in, senior transfer Travis Holiday, who made his first start since the game against Rutgers Newark on Sept. 27th, stepped up to punch the ball out of harm’s way. In a turn of events, the clearance wasn’t enough. The Golden Wolves forced their way back within the box and scored on a vulnerable Profs goal to stun the home crowd in Glassboro.
“I think fear crept in towards the end,” McNamee said. “We got sloppy.”
The Profs took a season high 37 shots, which included 16 on frame. Despite the offensive production, Rowan couldn’t capitalize on finding their cushion even while holding Alvernia to just three shots on the night.
“I think it’s just unfortunate, I don’t believe in luck, but I think it’s a big lesson,” McNamee said. “I don’t view tonight as a failure, I just view it as a lesson.”
The No. 18 nationally ranked Profs, a squad currently 2-2-1 in their last five fixtures, will look to bounce back in Wayne, N.J. this weekend. Rowan is set to take on New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) rival William Paterson, marking the start of six consecutive conference games to close out the 2025 campaign.
“We got to play like we did tonight,” Baker said. “We got to score more goals and capitalize on our chances, but we got to keep possession and dictate the play like we did tonight.”
