Rowan University women’s volleyball swept the St. Mary’s College of Maryland Seahawks Friday night, 3-0, in Esbjornson Gymnasium. The win over the Seahawks marks the seventh straight win for the Profs.
The Profs ended the first set 25-18 and were able to keep their win streak going by taking home a second and third set victory (25-16, 25-20) .
“We don’t take any team for granted. We don’t take anything lightly,” Vanessa Hutchinson said. “I think all the hard work we put in practice really pays off in these games, and these are the games that we can actually just work on the things we’re doing in practice, which is really cool.”
The last time the Profs faced the Seahawks of St. Mary’s College of Maryland was over a decade ago, ending with a Seahawks win. Nearly 15 years later, the new team of Profs came out the winners.
The Profs started the first set with a steady lead, but after a four point run, the Seahawks started closing in on the Profs. After a hard fought rally, ended with an attack error by Julia Bobrowski of the Seahawks, the Profs saw their chance.
Senior libero Vanessa Hutchinson came alive, setting up senior Jena Kaul for a swing. Kaul found an opening, targeted the ground, and swung.
Many out of system plays had the Profs on their toes, but Hutchinson stepped up and helped the team find their rhythm in these plays.
“If you don’t have a good person that can get your team back…it causes more issues than you would realize, because most of our levels actually played a whole system,” head coach Deana Jespersen said. “So being able as a team to have somebody get you back in system and get that ball still to each pin, and be able to attack that way is unbelievably important.”
The Profs set to take on Montclair State University on Tuesday, Oct. 14. The Profs are 3-3 thus far in New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) play, with the Red Hawks next on the horizon.
Going into their fourth NJAC game, the Profs are not letting their undefeated conference record cloud their vision.
“As the engine gets going and you start getting into rankings…stakes get higher,” Jespersen said. “We can use every opportunity that we get to hone our craft and to work on things that we need to work on. So, you know, just taking it step by step, minute by minute.”
