Rowan University’s men’s and women’s swimming team made history during their season-opening meet on Oct. 11, hosting their very first “Pink Out” in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
Prior to facing the Stevens Institute of Technology at Tony Lisa Natatorium, the swim teams announced they had raised $11,975 for the HEADstrong Foundation, specifically The Hope Venture Fund. Portions of the proceeds will also go to specific families affected by breast cancer.
The Profs’ swimming teams join alongside the women’s volleyball teams as ones that hold pink out fundraisers during home events. Women’s volleyball held their pink out fundraiser on Oct. 4 during their tri-match at Esbjornson Gymnasium, with the money also going towards the same charities.
Along with all the support it provides in the fight against most widespread cancers worldwide, the event turns athletic drive into a social purpose.
Women’s swimming head coach Elise Fisher said the Profs received tremendous support, not just within the program, but also from alumni, the parent organization, and friends of their constituents.
Fisher further emphasized the deeper meaning behind this swim meet.
“There is a sense of comfort, relatability, and empathy towards one another who are dealing with this,” Fisher said. “I think highlighting that joint experience, as well as, of course, being able to provide for a family, or multiple beneficiaries who can use the resources and the funding, is what I think is super impactful.”
Men’s swimming head coach Brad Bowser shared the same viewpoints as Fisher. He emphasized how crucial it is to spread awareness about breast cancer and how their goal goes beyond the pool deck.
“From the teams within our program to the families involved, the awareness we’re spreading helps create ongoing conversations and encouragement for people affected by breast cancer,” Bowser said. “It’s truly been amazing to see just how much support and positivity have been given out of this Pink Out.”
While Breast Cancer Awareness month continues, both teams hope that this Pink Out will inspire others to take action. Events like this can demonstrate the power of sports and the impact it has to bring people in unity, spreading awareness, and reminding everyone that they don’t have to face this battle all alone.
