From their beloved french toast muffin to their extensive list of cold brews, it’s no surprise that Saxbys is a fan favorite on campus. Their first location in Business Hall is always packed, so it makes sense that the university wanted to open another location.
The second Saxbys, which has been in the works for some time, recently opened in the student center extension. However, was it the right decision?
Since the second Saxbys opened, they have been getting orders wrong. In my experience, both times I ordered from there, I have gotten my order wrong. First, I ordered a salted caramel cold brew with cold foam, and when I got my order, it did not have the cold foam. I thought nothing of it since I wasn’t charged, and I thought it was an error on my part. However, the second time I ordered was no different.
I ordered through the GrubHub app, and not only did I order from the wrong location, but I ordered a breakfast grilled cheese with bacon, and when I got my order, it was missing the egg.
While errors are to be expected, especially when a lot of the staff is new to the company, they should not be this frequent. If the university is going to invest in multiple coffee shops, they deserve quality and quantity, not just two of the same thing.
With this error of the missing egg, I contacted GrubHub support, and while I did not receive any sort of compensation, my dispute was sent to Saxbys. If I am going to pay the price of overpriced coffee and breakfast, I want it to be efficient, and I also want to know that I am getting the right order. I have ordered from the Saxbys in the Business Hall, and I have always received the right order.
Now, ordering through the Grubhub app has become more complicated with the addition of two Saxbys locations. Although both locations are labeled, it’s easy to mix them up when you’re rushing between classes. I have made the mistake of ordering from the wrong location, and while it was an error on my part, there should be a better way of telling the two locations apart.
My suggestion for fixing this would be to have specific names for the cafes or to put the picture of the location on Grubhub.
I understand that Saxbys is a student-run coffee shop and offers so many great opportunities for its students; however, I also think that there could have been better options in its place. Another chain coffee shop would have been more exciting and maybe even more successful.
Both locations offer the same menu items, which makes the entire experience of a new location feel underwhelming. Especially since I have been to Saxbys locations that aren’t on campus that offer menu items such as lattes themed after candy bars.
Since the opening, both cafes still have a long wait time. I believe that will change, since the Chamberlain Student Center expansion location gives more of a cafe vibe. It is hidden away in the back, making it often forgotten.
In the end, having two Saxbys locations on campus leaves more room for error and takes away from the opportunity to place a new coffee shop on campus instead.
