On Jan. 17, the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) released their latest list of the New Faces of Civil Engineering Collegiate Edition. The list includes ten up-and-coming civil engineers the society feels should be recognized for their performance in the past year. Among those was Rowan University senior Ian McKane.
Kristina Swallow, the president of ASCE, said McKane’s inclusion on the list was a result of multiple different positive aspects of his character and personality.
“Each of the New Faces of Civil Engineering Collegiate Edition displays a passion and dedication for the civil engineering profession through their studies and extracurricular activities,” Swallow said. “They are the role models that the next generation of civil engineers will look up to.”
According to ASCE, McKane’s work experience includes an engineering internship with the Camden County Municipal Utilities Authority, during which he visited construction job sites as an intern, researching the water treatment process, various ongoing projects and surveyed pipelines in the field. Because of his internship, he was inspired to pursue environmental engineering.
The press release sent out by ASCE listed several of McKane’s accomplishments, which include a position as the Events Chair for Rowan University’s ASCE Student Chapter, as well as being an active member in the Rowan Environmental Action League, the U.S. Green Building Council and the American Society of Highway Engineers Student Chapter.
Quoted in the release, McKane said that while this was an excellent honor, he feels that this is only the beginning of his journey.
“There are many problems facing the world today, but I hope that as a civil engineer I am able to play my part in solving them,” McKane said. “I hope that throughout my career I am able to leave a lasting, positive impact on the world.”
