On Sept. 3, Rowan women’s volleyball played their first game in 665 days, after their 2020 season was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
It wasn’t without an early season set back though, since their original season opener against Neumann University on Sept. 1, got postponed due to inclement weather.
So, instead, the Profs started their season at the Battlefield Classic in Gettysburg, PA.
They went 2-2 in the classic, splitting games on Friday with a loss to Elizabethtown College 0-3 and won against Messiah University 3-1. Saturday’s games were split as well, defeating the Gallaudet University 3-1 and falling to Gettysburg College 2-3.
Coming off her most successful year yet, totaling 19 wins and a berth in the conference championship match, Head Coach Deana Jespersen was eager for the beginning of the 2021 season since the 2020 season was lost to COVID-19. Though, the effects on the lost season are still playing a role this year.
“The pandemic really was a wrench in a lot of things,” Jespersen said. “And you can feel the pandemic, still, as you’re trying to coach now, because your chemistry takes a break.”
Despite this setback, she is proud of how the girls handled their time away from the court.
“The girls do a great job of trying to stay connected during the time of the pandemic,” Jespersen said. “I commend them for doing things on their own, to kind of see each other and stay connected.”
The Profs hope to brush off their losses from last week in the Rowan Quad tournament they are hosting this weekend.
