The end of October is quickly approaching and so is the end of Rowan University field hockey’s regular season.

Less than two months ago, the team played their first game of the regular season against Ursinus College where they grabbed an early win. Now that they have officially reached their final two games, Captain Dayna DeVincentz, a senior, can’t believe just how fast it got here.

“It’s crazy that it’s already the end of the regular season,” DeVincentz said. “It feels like we just got started yesterday.”

Reaching this final week was a feat in and of itself, considering the ever-looming worry of cancellation due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but everything turned out better than DeVincentz could have hoped for.

“At the beginning of the season, obviously with last season being canceled and so many unknowns, we weren’t quite sure… what was going to happen,” DeVincentz said. “And we basically had two freshman classes coming in who never played in a Rowan uniform before… But now coming to the end of the regular season, we’re very, very happy with how we’re playing and where we are as a team.”

The team is currently riding a ten-game win streak that includes some very impressive victories, whether it be games won by large margins or ones where they took down other nationally ranked teams like The College of New Jersey (TCNJ) and Kean University.

Over the streak, they scored four or more goals in six of the games and also were able to keep the other team completely off the score sheet in another six of those games. In total, the Profs scored 45 goals while only letting up six.

“We’re feeling really well,” DeVincentz said. “I mean, we’re on definitely a good streak, and chemistry is looking good… we’re definitely happy with our play.”

This week, their penultimate game of the regular season is against Elizabethtown College on Oct. 27, which is also their final regular season home game. They will then travel to Wayne, New Jersey on Friday to face New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) rival William Paterson University.

“We’re kind of just hoping to finish up strong, so get the two wins, and be able to go into the playoffs maintaining our winning streak,” DeVincentz said. “But we also just want to see everything come together, whether it’s passing combinations or finishing more on the corner or coming up with more defensive stops.”

Their team motto of “Right here, right now” still rings true as the NJAC tournament begins just next week. DeVincentz and her team realize they cannot get hung up on what comes in the future until they finish out what is right in front of them.

“We pretty much take it one day at a time and we don’t get too ahead of ourselves,” DeVincentz said. “I mean, obviously we’re excited about what’s to come later, but we’re focusing this week on this week and today on today.”
