With just a few meets remaining on the indoor track and field team’s schedule, the women’s team is working on improving event times in pursuit of the NCAA DIII Tournament.

This past weekend, Rowan headed to New York City on Friday for the Armory College Last Chance, then went into Boston on Sunday for the Boston University Last Chance Qualifier.

Profs senior Aspen McMillan, coming off a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) record-breaking performance a week prior, won the 60 meter hurdles on Friday. McMillan also became first in Division III in the event with her time of 8.77 at the NJAC Championships. She now stands in third.

Even more, McMillan was named the G. Larry James Most Outstanding Athlete of the year and also a member of the All-Conference first team after the conclusion of the NJAC Championships.

Kierston Johnson, Sidney McLeod-Whitener, Chelsea Smith and Pelumi Adesina all recorded season-best times in their respective events on Friday.

The distance medley relay team, made up by Alyssa Sanders, Claire Incantalupo, Hannah Vendetta and Myiah Sturdivant would highlight Sunday’s outing, finishing first and tallying a season best time of 12:04.41.

Anchoring the race was sophomore Vendetta in the 1600 leg. Her split of 5:02:80 was nearly two seconds faster than her and the team’s expectations for the day.

“I knew the time I needed and when I looked up and saw what our time was, I just wasn’t expecting it,” Vendetta said.

Vendetta was named as Most Outstanding Track Athlete of the year. She recorded her best time in the 800 meters back at the championships.

“It felt awesome,” Vendetta said about the award. “It offers a lot more space than the open 800 so I just ran my own race.”

Senior Michelle Macauley, who broke a meet and school record in the long jump at the NJAC Championships, was named Most Outstanding Field Athlete of the conference and earned All-Conference first team honors as well.

Rounding out All-Conference first team selections was the 4×200 meter relay team.

Freshman Makayla Taylor made the All-Conference second team, as well as the 4×400 meter relay, the 4×800 meter relay and the distance medley relay teams.

Even still, there is much more work to be done.

And it’s pretty simple work for head coach Derick Adamson.

“They need to get faster,” Adamson said.

The team heads to Ithaca College for the All-Atlantic Track & Field Conference Championships this Friday and Saturday. It will be the last chance for members of the team to qualify for NCAA DIII times.

As of now, McMillan and Darielle Cross are set in the 60 meter hurdles, Macauley is in for the long jump and Angel Rowe will represent the triple jump.

Yet again, Adamson has simple expectations for his team come March 8 and 9.

“We should come back with some hardware,” Adamson said.
