The Student Government Association Senate passed its official budget for the 2019-20 school year at its Monday night meeting. The budget passage was slightly out of the ordinary, as many Senate members motioned to vote on the budget the minute it was introduced.

Although the budget passage was quick, this SGA meeting was particularly special for SGA President Rbrey Singleton, since it was his last official meeting as SGA President. The senior political science major became involved with SGA as a senator his freshman year and is heading to law school in the fall.

“Rowan SGA has really changed my life,” Singleton said. “It’s opened me up to so many new things and has taught me things that I didn’t even know about myself.”

The Senate gave Singleton a standing ovation towards the end of the meeting as many wished him luck in law school.

Singleton’s tenure as SGA President has seen quite a few ups and downs. His way of addressing the co-pay controversy at the wellness center was met with heavy criticism last semester by both SGA senators and students alike. However, his leadership, compassion and outreach helped unite students during the protest last week and has been seen as a positive role model for many incoming Rowan students.

Assistant vice president for student governmental relations Kevin McCarthy saw Singleton as a mentor when he first got involved in SGA.

“Last year, I joined SGA first as a student worker, then a senator and now AVP for governmental relations,” McCarthy said. “Throughout all of that, Rbrey really showed me the ropes on how to do it. It’s a little bittersweet to see him go, but I’m nonetheless amazed by his job as president and wish him nothing but the best in law school.”

Feeling both overjoyed and anxious about the future, Singleton is confident about his impact at Rowan.

“It feels a little weird at the moment, but I’m excited that I was able to leave some sort of an impact on Rowan,” he said. “Overall, I feel incredibly confident about SGA’s future.”
