After a strong performance at the Swarthmore College Quad that included wins against University of Redlands and Arcadia University, the Profs volleyball team has hit a snag in the road.
The Brown and Gold have lost three straight games, including their conference opener against rival, Stockton, going a combined 2-9 in the process.
“Overall I think we played well,” said captain Megan Jacobi. “I think it was just a sense of continuing to have that drive and integrity which we’re still figuring out. We do have seven freshmen that did come in and they’re completely contributing to this program, but you know getting everyone in and upperclassmen taking on new roles, it’s still getting used to, but we aren’t really worried by it and we look to keep it in stride and keep working.”
Captain Emma Cormican echoed the same sentiment.
“I think we’re just trying to find our groove,” Cormican said. “We came off two big wins at Swarthmore and I think it just didn’t completely translate into Stockton. I think our communication was a little off, but we’re trying to find our drive and intensity to get us into the game.”
Jacobi agreed with her co-captain, saying team communication is something the team needs to work on, as it has a big impact on the team, and believes it’s one of the best ways to end the losing streak.
“I think the biggest thing for us is just continuous communication, which is a huge aspect of volleyball. I think when we realize the huge value it has for our team, I think it can be super powerful. So communication and energy is what we look to strive for this week.”
Even with the losing streak, neither captain seems to think this is a long-term issue, a belief they say that runs through the whole team.
“Overall, some of those losses drive you to your highest victories and triumphs,” Jacobi said. “We take it game by game, and we hope to do really well this week.”
Cormican says that the team are taking the loss as a learning experience and will only continue to grow from it.
“I think experience is what drives you to be better,” Cormican said. “You know how much that sucked to lose and you know how fun it is to win, so I think knowing how low that low is, only pushes us towards that high we want to get to. You have your wins and you have your losses, every team goes through that. I think it’s just a little lull right now. We’re still early in the season, a month and a half left and a lot of games to play, so I don’t think we’re ready to give up just yet.”
The Profs went on to win their first NJAC matchup of the year against Ramapo 3-2 on Wednesday night.
They’ll be on the road against William Paterson on Sept. 26.
