After suffering a loss last Tuesday night to the #2 National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) ranked team, The College of New Jersey Lions, the Profs certainly wanted to beat the Hawks of Montclair State University from spoiling the team’s senior day on Saturday night. 

On the evening when Rowan University celebrated seniors Morgan Novak, Casey Wagner and Bridget Boyle’s final home game, the team rallied to an exhilarating victory with a score of 4-3 against the Red Hawks. 

After escaping a one-goal deficit late in the first quarter, the Brown and Gold regrouped and determinedly took control of the game. 

In the final seconds of the first quarter, sophomore Liz Fox converted a goal from a corner set up assisted by Wagner. 

Then Fox managed to finish a short pass from fellow sophomore Myranda Mccabe inside the five yards, in an exact play from the previous one. 

Fox’s third goal of the day came from the same position, finishing another short pass from a corner set up. 

Leading all scorers and completing a hat-trick, Fox perhaps enjoyed her best game in a Brown and Gold uniform.

“It feels good just to know my teammates have my back,” Fox said. “We know what works, so if it is not broken, don’t fix it.” 

For a moment, it seemed as the Prof’s lost momentum and saw their three goal advantage vanish into just a one-goal lead in a matter of minutes. 

The Red Hawks benefitted from the Profs’ yellow cards, in which the Brown and Gold saw one less player on the field for them. 

“We had a couple of people sitting out in the fourth quarter,” said head coach Michelle Andre. “We are relying on a very young squad out there. At one point, we might have had five freshmen on the field. They were in a high-pressure game and they handled it very well. I am very pleased with them.” 

Although the Profs sealed the win versus a tough NJAC opponent, Wagner believes the job is not finished.

“We are going to take it game by game,” Wagner said. “We have a few games left in the regular season. Then we move into playoffs, so it will be one game at a time.” 

The Profs finish their final two regular-season meetings on the road when they visit Elizabethtown College on Wednesday night and then FDU-Florham on Saturday.
