The 47th annual Paul Short Run is in the books for the Rowan women’s cross country team.
The Profs competed in the women’s open 6k race and women’s college brown 8k race, both of which they were successful in.
In the open race, Carley Tool, a junior, finished at 25:50.3 to rank 197th overall. Lindsey Hofschneider, a senior, finished at 27:20.0 (254th) and Mia Guerra, a freshman, finished at 27:46.9 (265th). The race primarily featured Division I competitors, but the Division III Profs still achieved solid times.
In the brown 8k, the Profs took 38th place overall, led by Anna Sasse, a freshman, with a time of 23:55.6 (176th.)
Head Coach Derick “Ringo” Adamson, relished in his group’s ability to improve upon their last race.
“I told the girls that they still have time remaining to improve,” Coach Adamson said. “Time only runs out on those that do not use it wisely. We just have to focus on getting ready for October 31 when the [New Jersey Athletic] Conference races begin.”
Hofschneider credits the team’s training and perseverance in dropping their race times.
“We had tough workouts and longer runs to develop our aerobic systems and really build up our confidence,” Hofschneider said. “The extra time definitely helped us to grow individually and as a team and really practice pack running, which is what will help us in the big races like conference. It definitely paid off last Saturday as a lot of girls made big improvements.”
The Profs will be able to show off their hard work on Oct. 16 as they host the Border Battle.
The Border Battle will feature over 50 high-ranked cross country programs at the DREAM Park course in Logan Township.
“It has been like trying to prepare for a wedding and trying to account for everything that could go wrong,” Coach Adamson said. “We have been able to find ways to make things work and we are way ahead of the game. We are excited to have tons of alumni and spectators come out and support our team and the event.”
A crowd of 3,000 or more is expected to attend the event on Saturday. Coach Adamson speaks to the event’s prestige and challenge.
“If they have ever wondered what a National Championship feels like, this will be the place to be,” Coach Adamson said. “To get ready, they have been tearing up some Glassboro hills, getting 4.67 miles of workout. That does not even take into account the 1.8 miles they run back and forth to get to the hills. It is definitely the best they have felt in a while.”
The Border Battle is the only upcoming race on the women’s cross country schedule until Oct. 30, when Rowan will travel to Stockton University for the NJCA Champions. Students are welcome to come and support the Profs during the Border Battle at 11 a.m. on Saturday.
