Rowan Club Rugby destroyed James Madison University this past Saturday morning. That’s not an overreaction. The score was 63-10.
After coming off a much-needed bye week, Rowan looked to get back on track against a weaker JMU team after recently falling to a division rival in Salisbury University 12-10. It was a completely different story on Saturday. Assistant Coach Bill Stom was ecstatic for the team.
“I think this is the first game where we played a full 80 minutes,” Stom said. “There was never a loss of effort or sense to pump the brakes and the boys did a great job out there.”
Rowan’s passing was one aspect that stood out, as Coach Stom described it as “spectacular” through his eyes. The Profs made little to no mistakes throughout and it was their first “perfect game of the season” according to Stom.
When it comes to scoring, senior Captain Chase Shebey chipped in along with junior Dylan Glassberg, sophomore Andrew Mahieu, senior Jonathan Mitchell, senior Ethan Mabilog, senior Grant Howell, junior Derrick White, and junior Joseph Smith were just some of those involved within the tries for Rowan.
“It was a complete team effort,” Stom said.
Senior Hunter Musson didn’t miss on a single one of his conversions, nailing all seven of his attempts after coming off a shaky game against Salisbury.
Even though Rowan is now 4-1 they have a situation ahead of them, they aren’t in play for the conference championship yet. The problem is that there are three other teams sitting at 4-1 in the conference.
“It’s kind of crazy because everyone has beat each other in a circle. We beat St. Joe’s, St. Joes beat West Chester, West Chester beat Salisbury and Salisbury beat us,” Captain Akil DeBruhl said. “If we don’t win, we would need a lot of help, so we are in win-now mode.”
This upcoming Friday, Rowan faces a weaker Rutgers team then plays their biggest game of the season against West Chester on November 13. Barring a loss to Rutgers, Rowan will travel with the season on the line for a chance to play for a conference championship against their rivals.
