After having some trouble offensively through the first couple of games this season, the Rowan women’s lacrosse team has seemingly found their footing.
The team has scored more than 10 goals in each of their last five, the most recent of which resulted in a 12-7 home win over Haverford College on Wednesday. Rowan (5-2) was paced by hat tricks from junior attack Rachel Hofbauer, senior midfielder Brittany Bollendorf and senior attack Rachel Emerson.
The contest started off at a breakneck pace.
Hofbauer netted the first of her three goals 30 seconds into the game. Emerson would get on the board about a minute later.
“We came out strong in the beginning, we played very well offensively,” head coach Lindsay Delaney said. “We were attacking, defense was playing shut down and [goalkeeper] Erin [Horner] played great.”
Sandwiched between a couple Haverford goals was a 6-0 run by the Profs with goals by junior midfielder Ali Herbert, Bollendorf, Emerson and junior attack Danielle Hubbs.
It marked the third time this season that the team had allowed two or less goals in the first half.
“We were communicating a lot. The defense is really helpful with stopping them before they even got to me,” sophomore goalie Erin Horner said. “They slowed the girls down made their shots not as strong. It was easier for me to make the saves.”
In the second half, Haverford starting showing some life offensively but were never within five goals of Rowan. Scores by Hofbauer, Bollendorf and Emerson kept the game out of reach.
“I think the team is still young and they are not confident enough. If something goes wrong, it’s okay, they can bounce back,” Delaney said. “When things started not going their way, they started to almost panic a little bit and unravel. It’s just some undisciplined behavior when we feel frantic we make it more challenging that it is.”
Five different players scored for the Profs for the fifth straight game. Rowan outpaced Haverford in terms of shots, ground balls, draw controls and free-position shots.
The win marked the fourth straight for the team.
“I think we’re just growing as a team and we’re learning how to work together. We’re getting used to each other. It’s just great that our team is so deep with players,” Horner said. “I feel like I see better things every game. We just keep improving.”
