On Friday, Dec. 2, the Rowan women’s indoor track and field team started off their season at the FastTrack Opener Invitational.

Even though there was no team scoring at the event, the team started off the season with top performances from some of its members, including a standout performance from transfer student Emily Galvin.

Galvin finished first in the shot put and the weight throw events. Galvin came into the event feeling pressure and performed.

“There was definitely an expectation from Coach Liz [Assistant Coach Liz Madden] and from everybody,” Galvin said. “I feel like all the eyes were on me and people wanted to see what I could do. It was important, but I am not putting too much weight on the performance. It is the first meet and still the first week of December. Getting momentum was important but not horribly important.”

Even though Galvin finished in first place, she is still not completely satisfied with her performance and knows she can improve as the season goes on.

“I was really proud of my shot put performance,” Galvin said. “I was never really a shot putter, to be honest. My weight performance was alright. There are definitely some things I need to work on. But I am definitely not disappointed. I am changing my technique, so we will see where that takes me.”

Head Coach Derick “Ringo” Adamson was impressed with her performance and has been impressed with her transition on the team.

“The adjustment she had made has been unbelievable,” Ringo said. “She is a captain already. She has come in here and helped us. She has experience going against the best. The other girls see her work and want to work just as hard as her.”

Other standout performances were the 4×800 team, who finished in first place, and Molly Lodge, who finished in second place in the 200-meter race. With the strong performance of the team, Ringo has high expectations for the group moving forward.

“It is very important to build momentum,” Ringo said. “And I think the team has done a good job of that to start the season. From the time I have been here, there is only one other team that I think has started off this well. That team had many All-Americans and even a national champion. If I were to compare, this is the closest we have gotten to that team since then.”

With such high praise from their coach, the team will look to stay ready as they have a long layoff coming up. They will not compete again until the new year at the Alvernia Winter Invitational on Jan. 14.
