This past weekend, students received yet another Rowan alert about s shooting off campus. Early Saturday morning, at 2:19 a.m., a Timely Warning was sent to students via email.
The warning read, “Please stay clear of 204 Carpenter St, police are currently investigating a shots fired call. There are no reports of victims and the suspect fled prior to police arrival. This is an active police investigation.”
The CAD Activity Detail Report from the Glassboro Police Department notes that at approximately 2:01 a.m., a “handgun was discharged in residence.” The police arrived at the scene at 2:04 a.m.
This address is located off campus but not far from many residence halls. The home where the shots were fired is just across the street, 0.2 miles from Edgewood Park Apartments, and 0.3 miles from freshman dorms like Chestnut Hall, Magnolia Hall, Willow Hall, and Holly Pointe Commons. This has caused some students to feel unsafe on campus.
Freshman Brooke Schweiger and Jazalynn Yorio were both out while the shots were fired. Friends of theirs were also off campus and in the same neighborhood as the incident.
“They were terrified, crying and nobody really knew what happened until you get the Rowan Alert,” said Schweiger, a double major in elementary education and literacy studies.
Yorio noted that receiving the alert without any additional information can also feel frightening.
“I live farther, I live in the older dorms and I don’t have a roommate so it’s definitely scarier,” said Yorio, a marketing major.
Despite these fears, Alayna Rez, a University Campus Minister, expressed that with a campus as widespread as Rowan, these types of alerts become commonplace.
“If you’re going to have an open campus then there’s always a threat,” Rez said. “We [Rez and her colleagues] went to Penn State and there would be a shooting like 2 miles away and they would tell us, ‘Stay inside, don’t do anything,’ because people have cars, people can go places and Penn State is an open campus so anything within at least a 5-mile radius is a threat to students on campus.”
There was only one alert sent out to students about the incident, and there was no update about the situation. Rowan Public Safety and the Glassboro Police Department have not commented on the situation and the investigation is still ongoing.
