Over the weekend, Rowan women’s indoor track and field team competed at the Seamus McElligott Invitational in Haverford, Pennsylvania. The team performed strongly at the event and placed, but the person who possibly had the best day was sophomore Gloria Hughes.
Hughes finished in first place in the 60-meter hurdles and fifth place in the high jump.
“Coming into the race I knew I had to win,” Hughes said. “I was ready for it. As I was running I knew I could not let the girl next to me pass me. And when I finally did cross the finish line and won, I could finally have my moment of joy.”
Hughes has had a very good season so far compared to her freshman year which was anything but easy.
“My freshman year was tough,” Hughes said. “I felt like I could not put the pieces together. Now this year I feel like I am starting to put them together. The coaches are always on me and are there to push me.”
Head Coach Derick “Ringo” Adamson has also seen the improvement from Hughes but also knows that she has to keep working hard to keep getting better.
“It is a huge improvement,” Ringo said. “This is something I am gonna talk to her today about. If you are doing well, you just gotta keep going. Because there is always a next level of training, you want to hit your goal. All I can do as a coach now is to continue to have them improve and grow.”
Another Prof who had a strong outing was fifth-year student Emily Galvin who last week broke the weight throw record and continued to build off that success. Galvin finished in second place in the shot put and weight throw.
The 4×200 team also had their best performance of the season to this point. They finished in third place but had their best time of the season at 1:51.20. Ringo was very impressed with their performance. The team is all underclassmen. He sees this team as a way for development for the girls that are on it.
“I am proud of the performance they had,” Ringo said. “We put out freshmen. That is the future foundation. I must develop them. I can not just go and put the top ones out there. If I do that, then they will graduate and I will have to teach these girls from scratch. I am gonna let them carry it for a little bit. When we do need to tighten it up and make that team faster, we know where to go.”
The next place the Profs are going is to the Metropolitan Championships this upcoming Friday, Feb. 3, in Staten Island, NY.
