Rowan Athletics celebrated National Girls and Women in Sports Day on Saturday, Feb. 11, during Rowan’s women’s basketball game against Rutgers-Newark.
National Girls and Women in Sports Day is celebrated during the first week of February to help inspire girls to participate in sports and realize their full power.
“It’s [about having] someone you can look up to. I know when I was little, I had my sister to look up to, and I had family and friends to look up to,” Regan Russo, a player on the women’s basketball team, said.
During halftime of the basketball game, Rowan invited young girls from St. Charles Borromeo in Cinnaminson to hit the floor. This group of young athletes participated in a short basketball game as the halftime show.
As halftime was ending, the Profs came back onto the court to prepare for the second half of their game. They showed support for the girls from St. Charles Borromeo and cheered for them from the sidelines. Once the minigame was over, Rowan joined the St. Charles Borromeo players for a group photo to commemorate the day.
At the conclusion of Rowan’s win over Rutgers-Newark, Rowan held a post-game celebration for all youth athletes that attended. They were able to get autographs from their favorite Rowan players, as well as take pictures with them.
Rowan player Danielle McCurdy spoke about the importance of celebrating this event with younger female athletes.
“Seeing the way they looked up to us and were so eager to see all of us and asking for our pictures, it just felt like such a good community here at Rowan, and to see the number of people to show up, it was awesome,” McCurdy said.
