The stage in the Student Center was decorated for the holidays as Rowan After Hours (RAH) hosted the last $1,000 Bingo of the semester. The event was co-sponsored by the Office of Winter and Summer sessions. The office helped call numbers during the game and put up a raffle for a free winter class.
Tori Lawrence, a junior accounting major and a Programming Coordinator for RAH, is in charge of organizing the bingo nights.
Lawrence has been planning this bingo since the Veterans’ Day-themed game last month. It’s December, so she decided with the help of her committee, to create the winter-themed bingo and prizes.
“I like being able to go out and buy almost anything I like and hope that the people will like [the prizes], too,” Lawrence said.
The night was split into four sections, each with four rounds within them. A different person called each section and in-between there were different mini-games, such as a penguin race where two people raced with a balloon between their legs, and a snowball throw where three people were chosen to try and knock down a pyramid of cups with a fake snowball.
Most of the prizes had the winter and holiday theme in mind, such as winter Rowan spirit clothes, ugly sweaters and hot chocolate kits. There were also some “Star Wars”-themed prizes in anticipation for the new movie, such as a Chewbacca backpack and a 4 ½ foot tall Darth Vader figure that could talk and had a lightsaber. The big prize of the night was the $100 Rowan spirit blanket that was won by Shenaya Barlow, a freshman political science and accounting major
“I was aggravated [sitting through the bingo],” Barlow said. “I sit through these bingos and I never win. I feel great now and I can’t wait to show my roommate.”
The prize of most value ‑ a free winter class - was chosen through a raffle, which freshman athletic training major Taylor Keehn won.
Ties were broken by various contests between the winners. Some tie breakers included: “Man, Bear, Taco,” which is a twist on the popular Rock, Paper, Scissors game; a Chips Ahoy Minute to Win It game where the people who won had to get a cookie from their forehead to their mouth without using their hands; and simply rolling a giant die to score the highest number.
RAH is co-sponsoring a Cram Jam on Monday, Dec. 14 from 10 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. in the Student Center.
