The Rowan men’s swimming team fell to 1-1 after a tough loss on Saturday, Oct. 28, to the New York University (NYU) Violets with the scoring totaling up to 192.5 for the Violets and 67.5 for the Profs.
Going into the week, head coach Brad Bowser already had an inference on how this meet would go, and braced his swimmers for the storm that they were inevitably headed into.
“You kind of know within our sport who’s gonna win and who’s not,” Bowser said. “There’s some meets that are close. Some teams match up better, some teams don’t. Last year we were close with them. This year we weren’t.”
Every month there is a new coach’s poll of the top 25 teams in the CSCAA (College Swimming Coaches Association of America) for the Division III level. The beginning of the season’s coach’s poll had NYU ranked fifth in the conference, while the Profs ranked 25th.
With that being said, the Violets won 14 out of the 16 events that took place during the meet, with the other two events being won by the Profs captain and senior swimmer Jack Watson.
With the margin of the loss being so big, Coach Bowser is not letting this affect his game plan for the rest of the season, as well as the morale that he wants to keep for his swimmers.
“In the sport of swimming, we go into what is the end result, which is we build our practice schedule, our philosophy is built towards the last meet of the season, not the second or third… so if you lose a dual meet, you lose a dual meet. You just throw it up in the air,” Bowser said. “Some coaches define their coaching based on their win and loss record… My opinion is that if we can get everybody to fire in one direction as an individual, we’re really good as a team. Right now it’s too early in the season to get everybody firing with as young of a team as we have.”
The Profs will have a chance to bounce back from this loss when they travel to Salisbury, Maryland on Saturday, Nov. 11 to take on the Sea Gulls at 1:00 p.m.
