Jalen Hurts and Nick Sirianni. This quarterback and head coach combination will be the reason why the Eagles make it back to the Super Bowl, or get embarrassed by the rest of the NFL.
For starters, Jalen Hurts has been a phenomenal surprise for the Eagles since his first full season as the starting quarterback for the franchise back in 2021. From leading a 9-8 team to the playoffs to having an MVP-caliber year in 2022, Hurts put the league on notice.
Last year’s Eagles team even saw some good in Hurts, but that was only until the Eagles had one of the biggest collapses you will ever witness.
Turnover issues, lack of coaching, and having the 7th worst defense explains how the Eagles went from an astonishing 10-1 record to losing five of their last six games of the season.
It was during that decline that Jalen Hurts looked like a completely different quarterback who had less confidence and more mental errors. He was intercepted a career-high 15 times last year, which was the same amount of giveaways he had his previous two seasons combined as the Eagles’ starter.
Including fumbles, Hurts has now accumulated the most total turnovers (26) of any quarterback since the start of the 2023 season.
Hurts has talent and continues to be recognized as one of the league’s finest. With that being said, he must find a way to limit his turnovers, present some poise, and generate leadership within the Eagles locker room if they want to succeed in their 2024 campaign.
Nick Sirianni is not excluded from this equation. Since becoming head coach of the Philadelphia Eagles, he has made the playoffs in all of his first three years, which includes a Super Bowl LVII appearance.
Although Sirianni’s job is in question, he has still found much success since his hire, having a career record of 36-18 in the regular season and postseason. It is worth mentioning that he did have two future head coaches as coordinators at his disposal during his first two years.
Following the departure of Shane Steichen and Jonathan Gannon, Sirianni has yet to find ways to win without them.
Going back to last year, Sirianni had no answers to help save the Eagles from their demise. It almost seemed as though he lost the locker room by the postseason.
The Eagles became the first team in NFL history to start a season 10-1 and never reach 12 wins. Sirianni’s Eagles were also embarrassed in the Wild Card against Baker Mayfield and the Buccaneers, losing 32-9.
Sirianni’s role as Eagles head coach is up in the air with questions surrounding his impact on the team. He leaves play-calling duties to both his coordinators and has not called the offense since the beginning of the 2021 season despite being a former offensive coordinator.
Now three weeks into the 2024-25 season, the Eagles sit 2-1 with Hurts and Sirianni still the center of attention and many question marks still apparent.
Can Jalen Hurts get back to MVP form, and will Nick Sirianni survive the hot seat? As they always say, time will tell.
