There is nothing like college students being in the Halloween spirit. Age will never be a deterring factor in the hands of college students who love the dark and dreary ambiance of Halloween night.
On Monday, Oct. 7, The Women of Westby hosted a candle-making event in Westby Hall at Rowan University. This event was designed to bring out the free expression of students through the mindful passion of art. The Women of Westby is a Rowan University organization compelled by art activists who are devoted to tackling socio-economic issues and promoting student and alumni art. There will be many events coming soon in the fall semester, starting with an activity that involves monsters in the night and witchcraft goodness.
All majors were welcome to melt candle wax into their own creative Halloween decorations. These decorations followed the basic themes of classic spooky witchcraft, and some weren’t in the Halloween theme; just fun and silly. This was also a way to relieve some stress from classes.
Sam Hiester, a senior majoring in theater with a concentration in design and technology at Rowan, gave insight into how he feels about the event.
“Yeah, it’s pretty relaxing and also to get away from all of the schoolwork,” Hiester said.
As for candle-making, it could also promote some minor improvements in your mental health. According to Dove Med, Candle making can improve several health benefits to improve your health and well-being. This includes stress reduction, improved sleep, focus on concentration, enhancing the quality of your mood, and increasing creativity.
Leah Reilly, president of the Women of Westby and senior with a focus on fine metals and jewelry, shares the details of why candle-making was the best decision for the club.
“Yeah, I wanted to try something different and something people wouldn’t always get to do even in their time,” Reilly said.
Gabby Margulies, senior art studio major, fulfills her passion for art and shows her excitement through the candle-making process
“And I guess for tonight, I’m just enjoying collaborating with other students, meeting with new people, and making Halloween-themed art,” Margulies said.
