On Oct. 11, in Discovery Hall, It’s On Us held an event open to the public. Staff members wrote students anonymous letters on how to build healthy relationships. The event was held on Friday night in Discovery Hall. Since It’s On Us is a newly chartered club at Rowan, they are still building a membership.
Despite that, the staff members continued to write letters in hopes that this would help students who are dealing with their real-life struggles.
Amya Dickens, a senior, is the president of It’s On Us and has plans for what they want to offer to students.
“We’re going to actually make a scrapbook so people would be able to see everything that we’re doing,” Dickens said. “We don’t want people to say like, ‘oh like sign their name off of it’ or anything like that. We want to keep everything anonymous because here are people’s actual opinions.”
In this event, they are looking to try to help students get a feel of different people’s voices and advice, rather than just people they may be close with.
“I feel like some people, especially some people that I’ve heard from…that wrote letters, can actually relate to those things and maybe hearing it from not a friend or a family,” Dickens said. “That’s why we want to keep it anonymous. It could be more beneficial from someone that’s me than random.”
They are looking to provide young adults with healthier relationships and feel less stressed around the campus. Nijel Perry, a senior, is the secretary of It’s On Us and speaks on why they are running an event like this.
“We do these letters to make sure that we give them advice,” Perry said. “They should feel encouraged by these letters, they should feel like…maybe [they] should do this instead of what [they’re] already doing in a relationship. Hopefully, they learn from this like they learn from their letters…hopefully they take our advice and do whatever they want to do with it.”
This event looks to help students on campus with how they should handle their everyday lives. It’s On Us wants to make students feel more safe on campus.
Erwin Wambi, Rowan junior, is the special operations coordinator of It’s On Us. He talks about the importance of this event.
“It’s more of creating an understanding where students can acknowledge what kind of relationships they are in,” Wambi said. “If a student is in a relationship, by writing out the feeling of what a healthy relationship is, that would create an understanding of them.”
It’s On Us hopes to provide students with an outlet and build a sense of community.
“We are just going to continue to do what is important for the purpose of our organization,” Dickens said. “When people come, we love them, we welcome them, and if they continue to come, we welcome them, and we are just going to keep doing events like we always do.”
