Throughout my academic career I have struggled with self esteem and unfortunately, it’s due to school work. Lots of times when turning in work, I have felt that my personal work had not met up to the standards I would have liked. The main impacts that I have noticed when the school work gets heavier have been my mental health decreasing, and my stress levels rising.
This is an issue that many college students go through, especially in their first year of college.
As the year progresses, the amount of school work is also getting larger, and with that, it is important to make sure that your mental health is in a good state. Many students can get stressed out with the amount of homework as well as classwork being given, and while it is important to balance doing your school work, it is also important to take time for yourself. A perfect balance between work and free time can help your overall self esteem.
A recent survey done by the Student Mental Health Landscape shows that 80% of college students say that they are struggling emotionally. In this survey, it also reported that 59% said that they are struggling with anxiety, and 58% of students are dealing with burnout. This can cause many students to not feel like their work is up to par.
Lots of college students are involved in many different clubs and organizations, which yes, can be very helpful with your mental health as you interact with your peers, build relationships, as well as self esteem. But at the same, it also takes away a lot of time to get work done.
For someone who might be struggling with mental health issues already, this can be a battle when adjusting to college life and simultaneously learning to manage your time properly. Time management is one of the most important things in college especially when it comes to getting school work done on time.
Lots of students including myself tend to procrastinate on assignments. But believe it or not, procrastinating on assignments can also your hurt mental health in a major way. Waiting until the last minute to get an assignment done can put an immense amount of pressure on students because of the fact that you have much less time to get the work done.
This is excluding the possibility that you might not even understand the content of the class or assignment. In this case with procrastination, you are now given even less time to communicate with the professor and ask questions.
A good way to help raise your overall self esteem and help with getting your work done efficiently is to use a planner. A planner can not only help with your assignment but can also be used to plan out the rest of your day, and a good tip is to leave time in your planner to get school work done.
But more importantly, to also include “you time”. It doesn’t need to be an extremely long time, but enough time to decompress, and do something that you personally enjoy. This can be cooking, gaming, cleaning, seeing friends, anything that makes you happy, and gives you the motivation to keep going throughout the day.
Another good way to mend your relationship with your self esteem and academic life; when you are given an assignment, try to get the assignment done on that day, even if it is not due for a while. If you are able to do this you would be less likely to procrastinate on assignments and you no longer need to worry about getting an assignment done before the due date. This will also give you enough time to email your professor and ask any questions to your professor with enough time to make any necessary changes.
Your mental health is one of the most detrimental things to your character. It is important to try to find solutions that work for you to raise your self esteem, despite having lots of assignments. This will assist you in succeeding in your academic life.
After all, you are here, so you should try to make the most of it.
