The Rowan field hockey team beat Ramapo, 6-0, on Saturday, Oct. 12 at Coach Richard Wackar Stadium. The win comes as Rowan celebrated Senior Night and honored all the senior players on the roster. The win pushes Rowan to 6-7 on the season and 1-0 in New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) play.
The scoring started early for Rowan when Allie Palumbo scored from five yards out just five minutes into the game. Palumbo scored again in the second quarter, receiving a pass at the top of the circle from Mia Foti and firing it into the back of the cage. The goals were her seventh and eighth of the season and gave Rowan a 2-0 lead going into halftime.
Palumbo, along with Jordan Sponzo, Madison Murray, and Isabel Weiner were the four seniors honored during the pregame for their contributions to the program. Sponzo and Murray were also able to make their season debuts, a moment that team captain Tess Herman was happy to see.
“That was so amazing, they have been working their butts off this entire season,” Herman said. “Especially with it being Senior Night and having the seniors getting recognized, it was awesome.”
Rowan turned it on in the third quarter, as four players all contributed a goal during the period. Teammates Alexa Ronning and Herman both tallied their third goals of the season, while Kylie Elwell and Ella Toll both recorded their first career goals as a Prof.
“Around the third quarter, they usually say the bats woke up, but that’s when our sticks woke up,” Andre said. “We pushed up more, and we were doing a good job of getting shots on goal and getting those rebounds and putting it into the back of the cage.”
The fourth quarter would remain scoreless on both sides, solidifying a dominant victory for Rowan.
The win against Ramapo kept Rowan’s perfect record against Ramapo all-time intact, making the series 21-0 in favor of the Profs. Rowan also posted back-to-back shutouts for the first time all season, thanks to another great performance by the defense which limited Ramapo to taking one shot on goal.
The effort was indicative of how important the Profs felt it was to start NJAC play on the right note. Andre is no stranger to success in the NJAC as she has guided Rowan to three straight NJAC Championships. She wants the results from this season to be no different.
“We know we have a target on our backs,” Andre said. “Our goal is to keep the NJAC running through the ‘Boro and to get a win tonight is important because every game matters.”
Herman echoed Andre’s thoughts.
“I think this is something that keeps momentum going forward,” Herman said. “Especially with how the season started, this win sets the tone going forward in the NJACs.”
Next time out, the Profs welcome conference rival TCNJ on Wednesday night. The game carries major implications as the winner will vault themselves to the top of the NJAC standings and help decide where the path to the NJAC championship might run through.
