On Saturday, Nov. 16, the UFC will return to the world’s most famous arena; Madison Square Garden in New York City for UFC 309: Jones vs. Miocic.
This will mark the eighth time the UFC Octagon has been set up at MSG. The card will feature 13 fights, including a legacy-making heavyweight title fight and a must-see rematch in the lightweight division.
In the main event, the UFC heavyweight title is on the line. The greatest of all time and current champion, Jon “Bones” Jones (27-1), will defend his title for the first time against former champion and the greatest heavyweight of all time, Stipe Miocic (20-4).
Jones, 37, has done it all in the UFC from becoming the youngest champion in history to having the most title fight wins in history. Jones won the UFC heavyweight title at UFC 285 by defeating former interim champion, Ciryl “Bon Gamin” Gane by submission in the first round. Jones holds 27 wins in his MMA career with ten via knockout and seven by submission. His opponent, the 42-year-old Miocic, is one of the most accomplished heavyweights in UFC history. Miocic has the most-ever heavyweight title fight wins and is the only heavyweight to defend the title three times. The Cleveland native won the title back in 2016 when he knocked out former champion Fabricio Werdum at UFC 198. Miocic holds 20 wins in his MMA career with 14 wins by KO and one by submission. This fight will determine who stakes their claim as the “baddest” man on the planet.
The co-main event will feature a rematch in a five-round fight between former UFC lightweight champion Charles “Do Bronx” Oliveira (34-10) and former title challenger “Iron” Michael Chandler (23-8).
This fight will be a rematch from their epic contest at UFC 262 when Oliveria, 35, shocked the MMA world when he knocked out Chandler at the beginning of the second round after a horrible first round. Oliveria went on to defend his title against Dustin “The Diamond” Poirier but lost before fighting Justin “The Highlight” Gaethje at UFC 274. Oliveria holds the UFC record for most finishes with 20 and has the most submissions with 16. His opponent Chandler will be looking for redemption in this fight, as the 38-year-old is one of the most exciting lightweights to enter the UFC since Justin Gaethje and Tony “El Cucuy” Ferguson. This will be an important fight for him, as with a win, can set himself up for a title shot in the future against the winner of Arman “Ahalkalakets” Tsarukyan and current champion Islam Makhachev.
