Raising Cane’s, one of the latest fast food chain restaurants to come to the town of Glassboro opened on Thursday, Jan. 9 at 695 Delsea Dr. Many students and Glassboro community members gathered in line on opening day to order the box combo with no coleslaw and extra toast.
The first opening days went smoothly as team members found the work days calm and not as busy, particularly the second day after opening. Trainers from across the states were brought to the store’s location to train the employees and worked with them during the first opening weeks.
Jayda Herbert, an employee of the establishment, works the front counter, drive-thru, and does prep at the chain restaurant. She worked during the store’s opening week.
“The second day I know that it wasn’t really busy, I mean it was kind of busy but it wasn’t super crazy. It was actually kind of calm which is good for opening because it’s not very hectic,” said Herbert.
With a focus on handling rush hours through team bonding, team members work together to prepare for each shift throughout the work day. The staff prepares for their rush during the morning shift with typically two team members scheduled to work in the morning. Additional staff come in at night to work at designated work zones.
“We have a whole bunch of people come in during rush rather than mornings. Usually, it’s like two people in the morning, usually during the rush it’s like five people in one zone,” said Herbert.
The store’s peak hours where employees have seen the most foot traffic is after school and work hours from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. This becomes one of the busiest times for the restaurant during the day. The staff makes sure they are prepared hours ahead of the rush by keeping the restaurant clean and having the food ready to be served to their customers.
“Morning shifts are usually really laid back and we just get everything situated for dinner shifts which is rush hour. Usually, after dinner shifts a whole bunch of people come after jobs or school so usually it’s a lot busier,” said Herbert. “We handle that by just having people prepared hours before and having all the food ready.”
Some employees who worked at other Raising Cane’s stores transferred to work at the new Glassboro store location. Herbert was one of the employees who transferred from the Deptford store location to help out the employees at the new store.
“It took a little bit, it was kind of scary honestly because you don’t know if it’s gonna be the same. It was really easy, I’ve honestly just adapted to it and it’s honestly great,” said Herbert.
Before the new Glassboro location, Raising Cane’s opened another restaurant in Deptford, New Jersey last April. Some students would travel to this location before the Glassboro store opened. With the Glassboro store’s opening, students now have a new hangout spot to eat and do homework closer to campus.
“My favorite part about Raising Cane’s opening in Glassboro is that it is closer than the one in Deptford so I don’t have to drive far to get there,” said Emilie Paul, a sophomore public health and wellness major.
With the new restaurant, many students have voiced their excitement for another food joint to be within walking distance from campus. As the Glassboro restaurant hits nearly a month since being in business, the store has gained a crowd of regulars comprised of students who found a new spot to debrief after classes.
“It’s pretty awesome,” said Christian Police, a junior computer science major. “It’s nice to have another fast food chain around by where I live on campus. It’s good food, definitely another chicken spot to check out.”
