Gianna Jones, who prefers “Gianna,” is a senior at Rowan University and has released her first R&B album called “Heartbreak” on all platforms. When Jones was little, she was always a part of the music industry. She began singing when she was young and participated in musical theater. Being a part of musical theater, Gianna realized that she wanted to pursue music and wanted to be on stage singing. This inspired her to want to make music and sing more.
Jones has been in the music industry for about two years. In 2022, she released her first song on SoundCloud. In 2023, she released music on all platforms for the first time.
This new album is based on Jones’ life and the things she has gone through. The album is a way to tell a story of her life that captures a deeper meaning.
“Personally, this album means a lot to me because it is the story of my life and the pain I have gone through. It has such a deep meaning to me,” said Jones.
While writing the album, one of the hardest parts was being able to talk about the deep experiences she went through and putting it into lyrics. Not only having the lyrics but being able to match the lyrics with the beat she was using was one of the difficulties of the songwriting process.
While making the album, Jones worked with a couple of producers, one of whom was based in Russia. She collaborated with producers named Timur Brondukov and Chris Horton. She had another producer who engineered the song name, Jah Dillard, who helped with the entire album.

“I had a lot of people help with this. I wrote the whole thing myself, but Jah engineered it, Timur produced half, and Chris produced the other half,” said Jones.
Gianna’s music is based on the R&B genre. Her music was influenced by artists like Alyaiha and Mya. Gianna began writing lyrics that fit into the category of Summer Walker and Sza. However, she then realized she wanted to focus on the 90s aspect of R&B.
“When I first came to Rowan in 2021, I had no idea what style of music I wanted to make. I knew it was going to be R&B, but I didn’t know I was going to specify in the 90s and 2000s. One day, I completely changed my whole flow and really appreciated the older sound more of 90s music and early 2000s music,” said Gianna.
Influenced by these artists, Gianna studied this type of music during that era. Studying this type of music helped Gianna get the same style as the 90s and 200s while modernizing it.
“I do get a lot of people saying how they can tell that is what I am going for and that they like the sound. So, I would say just the amount of effort I put into studying that time helps shape my music,” Gianna said.
Having the chance to study music, Gianna hopes to see her music evolve and have the ability to release more songs.
“Over time, I definitely see myself getting more confident and experimenting with maybe other genres and doing more collaborations. So I definitely see myself expanding further than where I am now,” said Gianna.
