Rowan women’s indoor track and field’s season has been full of highs and lows. They’ve battled injuries, sickness, and plenty of other curveballs, on and off the track. Now, the season is reaching its most important time: the postseason.
“We’re trying to get one percent better every day, especially now,” head coach Shedrick Elliott III said.
Last week, the team participated in the Valentine Invitational in Boston and the Widener Indoor Classic in Philadelphia. The event in Boston is where most of the Profs made an impact. Jasmine Broadway has continued to set season-bests for herself throughout the past few weeks, and that continued in the 200-meter event, running a 25.61. Two other Profs set season-bests in the same event, as Molly Lodge ran a time of 25.78, and Kayla Julien ran a 26.10.
“Molly is getting back into form,” Elliott III said. “She kind of clapped her hands as she got across the line and saw the scoreboard. Last week, she might have run her lifetime slowest time, so for her to get back was really good. She’s one of our leaders. That girl works extremely hard, does what’s asked of her, cares so much about the team. It’s really about the team for her.”
Elliott III also had good things to say about Kayla Julien’s season.
“Healthy and consistent,” Elliott III said. “She’s literally ran faster and faster every race.”
Broadway and Lodge were also pieces of a 4×400 relay team that set their top time of the season (3:57.38). Broadway and Lodge were joined by Nevaeh Lorjuste and Jasmine Pope in that event.
The mile run was also a key event for Rowan, with Anna Sasse putting together her best time of the season, running a 5:02.34, a new top-five time in the NJAC.
“It was definitely a highlight for Anna, considering that three weeks ago she had a pretty severely sprained ankle,” Elliott III said.
Gabriella Pagano, who has continued to improve week-by-week, also set a personal record in the mile with a time of 5:10.16.
A few other Profs occupied the Ott Center at Penn University for the Widener Indoor Classic. Sidney Whetstone competed in three events in Philadelphia, running an 8.23 in the 60 meters, 27.28 in the 200 meters, and recording 4.58 meters in the long jump.
The New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Championships loom ahead for the team, beginning on Saturday, Feb. 22, and running through Sunday, Feb. 23. It’ll be followed by the AARTFC Regional Championships in early March, and the NCAA Division III Championships in mid-March.
