Professor Lindsey Masciangelo is bringing an impressive resume of work, and industry experience to Rowan University’s sports communication and media program.
Masciangelo, who grew up in Voorhees, N.J., has a vast amount of experience in the sports industry from working for the Philadelphia Flyers in their marketing department to working for the Boston Bruins as an intern.
She received a degree in communications from Boston University and an M.S. in organizational development and leadership from St. Joseph’s University. Masciangelo was extremely blessed to have an internship coming out of college.
“ I went to school in Boston and was fortunate to have a communications major and fortunate to have an internship with the Boston Bruins,” said Masciangelo.
Masciangelo teaches strategic communication, event management, and sports branding/fan relations. Her goal as a professor is to give her students the skills to succeed with their passions.
“ My job is to make them employable, to give them opportunities to get jobs by setting them up for success, for giving them the skills that they need,” said Masciangelo. “The things that we talk about in my classes are real-world things.”
She worked for the Philadelphia Flyers as the vice president of marketing. The team was recognized by the Sports Business Journal as number one in the NHL. Masciangelo describes her experience of working for the team as “rewarding.”
“ The Flyers didn’t really need marketing because fans just came to the games,” said Masciangelo. “And then after the lockout years ago, they had to create a better brand and a sales strategy and a marketing strategy. You have passionate fans, you have people who want to come and see the team, and corporate partners who want to be involved. It was really rewarding.”
Not only has Masciangelo worked for the Philadelphia Flyers, but has worked for the Philadelphia Wings, a professional box lacrosse team. She describes the difference in working for both teams.
“Lacrosse and hockey are two different sports, but they kind of have the same concept, where it’s like a major professional sports team,” said Masciangelo. “It’s more of a minor league feel. So we were both owned by Comcast. So we had the resources from the Flyers, which was nice. But at the same time, you’re starting essentially like a minor league team. There’s a very small fan base and you have to grow fandom and get people interested. So it’s a little bit different than working for an NHL team but also you could do more.”
While attending both Boston University and St. Joseph’s University, she learned how important it is to network with people.
“ I would say to students now, and this is what I say to students in my classes, is get involved,” said Masciangelo. “Meet people, network. Most job opportunities come from the people that you get to meet and the people who get to see who you are. Showing up to class participating in class and being engaged in your major are different things. Be as engaged as you can.”
