Rowan women’s lacrosse has started the 2025 season red-hot with a 3-0 start to their campaign, highlighted by an upset win this past Saturday, March 1 over the No. 17 ranked Stevens Institute of Technology Ducks by a final score of 13-6 in Glassboro.
Stevens started off strong by striking first less than 30 seconds into regulation. The Profs were able to tie it up with 10 minutes left in the first period courtesy of an Alexis Lowry goal, her first of three on the day. Lowry, a rising sophomore, could be in line to be a major contributor for a Profs group that is upperclassmen heavy.
“She got playing time last year but she’s still young and she’s in there. Her first step is dynamic,” said head coach Lindsay Delaney.
Senior Molly Green put the Profs ahead less than two minutes later, a lead they would never relinquish as the team went on a scoring spree. Lowry, Calista Burke, Elaina Corson, and Fiona Lockhart all recorded consecutive goals, giving the Profs an 8-1 lead early in the second period.
Burke scored three straight during that span and led the Profs in scoring on the day with four goals. She felt that the team’s ability to let their emotions out has helped them silence doubters and start this season off strong.
“I think that last year there were a lot of emotions bottled up and now we’re just letting it all out on the field this year and showing people that we belong,” said Burke.
Stevens responded well to the tune of three consecutive goals, but Green and Lockhart both scored near the end of the half to keep the momentum in the Profs’ favor and enter the break leading 10-4. Delaney has attributed her team’s experience as a group and being able to lead themselves on the field as a key to their early success.
“We do less coaching from the sidelines. You’ll hear us, but it’s really them self-directing each other, coaching, holding each other to a standard of performance,” said Delaney.
The Profs were able to control the second half and keep Stevens from putting together a late comeback, courtesy of strong defense and a great performance on the day for sixth-year senior goalkeeper Mel Rodgers, who’s only allowed 13 goals in her first three starts of the season.
Burke, Green, and Lowry all added goals in the second half in the upset over the nationally-ranked Ducks. Green and Rodgers’ strong starts to the season earned them both New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Player of the Week honors.
“I think it’s definitely a great start,” said Green. “Best start since I’ve been here, I don’t think we’ve ever been 3-0. Definitely a confidence booster and we’re just looking to keep it going.”
The Profs find themselves atop the NJAC heading into the second week of the season but know it’s important to keep themselves level-headed no matter who the opposition is, as Delaney feels a group with this much experience has no reason to question the chemistry they’ve built over the past two seasons.
“There’s no other excuse then, ‘Pick up where you left off,’ cause all the starters are returning and they’ve only gotten better,” said Delaney.
The Profs will now hit the road and head to Pennsylvania to face off against the Muhlenberg College Mules on Thursday, March 6, before welcoming the Kenyon College Owls in a home match on Tuesday, March 11.
