Rowan men’s indoor track and field claimed yet another All-Atlantic Region Track & Field Conference (AARTFC) Championship during the two-day meet that took place in Ithaca, NY on Friday and Saturday. It’s the Profs sixth win in the seven-year history of the team event.
Rowan finished with 94 points, while SUNY-Geneseo finished in second with 70 points. SUNY-Cortland finished in third with 57 and Rochester was fourth with 56.5 points.
Head coach Dustin Dimit was extremely happy with the performance of his team and was thrilled that his team delivered.
“ We’re very happy with their performances,” said Dimit. “We always try to run our fastest at the end of the year and they delivered on those performances and we got a lot of national qualifiers and won the team title.”
The Profs took home first place in the 60-meter finals as junior Masai Byrd broke his own school record with a time of 6.88. His previous time was 6.82.
“ It was a true blessing because last year I didn’t even make the final,” said Byrd. “So to go out there and win. It felt surreal.”
Rowan was also represented in the 60-meter hurdles, as five of the top six scorers came from Glassboro. Jason Agyemang led the way for the Profs, setting the No. 2 time in Division III and a new personal-best with a 7.80. His mindset was what helped him secure victory in the 60-meter hurdles.
“ One of my best performances within my three years of being at Rowan was probably one of those was my best meet yet,” said Agyemang. “Had a great start. I went in there with a positive mindset, a powerful mindset, and I went out there and performed.”
Freshman Jamir Brown finished right behind him, with a time of 7.86 and junior Kwaku Nkrumah placed third and set a new personal best with a time of 7.87. Fifth-year Marquise Young (7.95) and junior Michael Lawrence (8.36) rounded out the top six, placing in fourth and sixth respectively.
Throughout the year, the Profs have bought into the idea that they could contend with the NCAA’s best, and so far, they’ve lived up to the challenge.
“ The goal from the beginning of the season was that we thought we could be a team that could contend at the NCAA championships,” said Dimit. “And these guys have bought into that the whole year. And now we’re seeing the results of that progress and really excited to see how we can finish it out and then on the outdoor a week later.”
While the outdoor season is set to get underway soon, Rowan will be sending 11 student-athletes to the NCAA Division III Indoor Track & Field Championships. The two-day event takes place on Friday, March 14, and Saturday, March 15 in Rochester, NY.
