At the last University senate meeting on March 7, Vice President of Facilities, Planning & Operations Joseph Campbell gave a presentation detailing the ongoing projects and renovations at Rowan’s Glassboro and branch campuses. Each project is at different stages of the construction process and a definitive completion date for most of these is unknown.
The Campbell Library has been undergoing major renovations. The Dreamscape floor was completed at the beginning of the semester, and the focus is now turning to the rest of the building.
Another one of the main construction projects is moving the IRT from Memorial Hall over to the library. Campbell explained these changes at the Senate.
“We have the Genius Bar, technology areas, and a lot of collaboration spaces. I know there’s going to be a classroom in there that they’ll be testing, and new systems on and also training,” said Campbell.
A key highlight of Campbell’s presentation was the upcoming infrastructure upgrades at Rowan’s main campus, which will address repairs to steam and condensate piping, improve the utility systems, and enhance structural elements.
Rowan is transitioning away from its steam-based central utility plant due to infrastructure issues, starting with the Business Hall where boilers will be installed.
“We’re starting a process where we want to get off of the steam and Central Utility Plant. The first building that will do that will be the Business Hall,” Campbell said. “All that steam that’s coming up behind Westby is because there’s underground water coming up to the pipes, which is corroding the pipes there.”
The Recreation Center is also getting some major updates. The old abandoned pool is being taken out and replaced with a new weight and training room, which will be open to everyone on campus, not just athletics.
The West Campus at Rowan University is undergoing significant development, with multiple infrastructure projects and new academic buildings in progress.
“We have a lot of things going on at the West Campus,” said Campbell.
One of the major projects includes the School of Veterinary Medicine and the Virtua Health College of Medicine Life Science Research Center.
“Right now, we’re very excited about that. It’s moving on schedule. We are scheduled to open this building up for the new class in August of 2025,” Campbell said.
Campbell also emphasized the importance of infrastructure updates to the West Campus and explained how the lack of infrastructure has been a challenge in developing.
“Part of the reason why it’s been hard to develop the West Campus is because we have no infrastructure. No roads, no sewer, electricity, gas, and all of that,” said Campbell.
The university has received a $16 million grant from the state, which helps support the infrastructure updates.
The final major update comes in the form of a new technology building for the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, which is still in the programming process.
Overall, Campbell’s presentation provided an overview of ongoing construction and renovation projects across Rowan University’s campuses and a look into the future of infrastructure at Rowan.
