Women’s History Month is nearing an end, and it has been a month of celebration, recognition, and remembrance of women’s contributions to history. From achievements in politics like the first Black female Vice President, Kamala Harris, to the strong and powerful women in sports like the record-breaking ways of Caitlin Clark, to Ariana Grande, who has broken countless records and paved the way for many of the new-generation pop stars seen today.
The month has highlighted the impact of women across generations, reminding people of their resilience, innovation, and influence in shaping the world today.
Most people have special and important women in their lives, and that is no exception when it comes to Rowan students. Whether it be their mother, a coach, or a famous athlete, women play an important role in these students’ lives.
For freshman Danae Pieters, it is a teacher in high school who mentored her.
“My high school teacher, my high school baking teacher specifically, she just helped me with a lot in my school, like a lot of drama and everything. And we still keep in touch and everything, so she’s just always been there for me,” Pieters said.
Meanwhile, freshman sports communication major Mia Foti chose her best friends, who are always supporting her.
“Some of the most influential women in my life are some of my best friends because they always do their best, and they are always pushing me to do my best. They’re also very supportive,” Foti said.
Women’s History Month for many serves as a source of inspiration, education, and empowerment. It encourages people to reflect on the importance of the inclusion of women and advocate for a more equitable future. For others, it’s just a time to celebrate and thank the women in their lives.
For freshman finance major Erin Rybka, it feels like it’s an important time to realize how much women contribute to society.
“Women are at the forefront of society because they make the families and it’s important because women teach you everything that you need to know. Everything that you need to learn. If you have a mom, she is the first person who is there for you and they teach you, like, all the lessons you need to know,” said Rybka.
Despite the many changes happening in the country today, the messages behind Women’s History Month remain powerful. Some Rowan students believe in the importance of celebrating women’s history and ensuring it is integrated into both on and off campus culture.
Senior Aidan Dougherty believes history is important to remember because it helps inspire growth.
“I think it’s just important to understand what and how people have kind of gone through things and in particular women. I think all history is just important because you learn from your mistakes and that’s why history is taught. And I think we can learn from our mistakes of how women were treated and are currently being treated in the world,” said Dougherty.
Women’s History Month serves as a reminder of the progress made and the work still to be done in achieving equality.
