On Monday, March 31, Pizza with the Pros welcomed SportsRadio 94WIP talk show host Hunter Brody.
Brody spent his first two years of college at Stevenson University, where he studied business communications. He then transferred to and graduated from Rowan University in 2020 with a bachelor’s degree in sports communication and media.
Before coming to Rowan, Brody had already started his own self-employed company, Brodes Media, which focused on creating sports content in several different ways, such as talk shows, blogs, and even gaming. This immediately stood out to Neil Hartman, the director for the Center for Sports Communication and Social Impact at the university.
“I would listen to sports talk radio 24 hours a day like it was a sickening disease. I was obsessed with it. I would sit there and I would listen to all the different hosts. I would have a notebook and I would have pros and cons of things I loved, things I hated, and what I would like to do if I was to do this. I would just sit in front of my camera and practice as if it was me on the air, sitting there for hours a day and re-listen to it over and over again,” Brody said.
The company helped Brody land multiple opportunities while in college. In 2018, he landed a position with SNJ Today, interning with the sports broadcaster for the summer and eventually being brought back to do live sports radio every Saturday morning from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. on 99.9 FM.
Brody also got the chance to do work in production. His work with Inside the Birds, which included producing multiple segments, was so impressive that after a year, he was able to acquire a role with 97.3 ESPN as an on-air producer. This was another role that only took one year for the people in the building to realize how special he was, so much so that ESPN offered him a full-time job straight out of college as a drive-time co-host for The Sports Bash with Mike Gill from 2:00 to 6:00 p.m.
Brody worked with Inside the Birds for three years and 97.3 ESPN for over two years. However, he left both companies in 2021 when he was offered to co-host “The Best Show Ever?” on 97.5 The Fanatic and NBC Sports Philadelphia.
“I left 97.3 because Brodes Media was doing so well. So while I was doing all this stuff for actual radio, I was still building my brand and doing my own thing every single day. It was taking off so much that I stepped away from 97.3 to do Brodes Media full-time, then a week after I left, I got a call from The Fanatic and they offered me weekend hosting,” Brody said.
Today, Brody is a sports radio personality for 94WIP, contributes to Bleacher Report, and continues to create sports content for his company. Brodes Media has been growing more and more every day, with its YouTube channel, Sports Talk with Brodes alone having more than 32,000 subscribers.
“Young guy, you can relate to, you hear his work ethic. That’s what made him stand out, and then his talent got him to the next level. I think Brody has got a great future in this business. I think in sports talk radio, WIP is looking for a younger voice. He’s one of the younger guys. I think it’s going to work out well for him,” Hartman said.
This was showcased towards the end of the event, as students would ask Brody what-if scenarios and his thoughts on specific things happening in sports today, answering the questions in the loud, strong voice that he uses on his talk shows. Almost all of the students who attended the event raised their hands when asked if they listened to his segments, showing how much the content creator has grown over the years.
Pizza with the Pros continues next Monday, with NFL Films senior producer/director Greg Frith.
