Rowan’s Student Government Association (SGA) met Monday in the Chamberlain Student Center Eynon Ballroom to make the final decision to potentially charter several clubs.

A charter hearing for the Criminal Justice Preparation Club during the Monday meeting was approved by unanimous vote, which granted the club financial support from SGA.

The Criminal Justice Preparation Club aims to help students studying criminal justice prepare for the field after graduation. The club helps student with creating resumes, conducting interviews and looking for internship opportunities.

The club also hosts panel events with guest speakers from the criminal justice field, according to club president Laura Casasbuenas.

After a charter hearing is approved, a club becomes eligible to obtain SGA funding according SGA President Daniel Cardona. Prior to having a charter hearing, a club must go through a petition hearing, allowing it to be recognized by SGA.

“It’s like a trial-run almost,” Cardona said.

Once a club’s petition hearing is passed, the club will have one year to run under SGA guidelines. If guidelines are not broken, the club will then be eligible for a charter hearing.

Women In Engineering (WIE) had their petition hearing at the meeting, and lost their petition with a 39-45 vote. This marks the second straight semester that the club hasn’t passed its petition hearing.

WIE operates as an affiliate of the “Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers” (IEEE). Women in Engineering focuses on encouraging professional women to continue careers in science, along with encouraging young women to pursue science careers.

Through IEE, the club is a nation-wide organization, according to Club President Torrie Griffiths. She says that the club still holds workshops and engineering events at Rowan, even though its two petition hearings haven’t been approved by SGA.

“The purpose of our club is to have these workshops that are interdisciplinary and show them off to the entire college, rather than a specific major,” Griffiths said.

There are no immediate plans for Women in Engineering to present itself to the SGA senate again. According to Griffiths, the club must repeat the chartering process before presenting to the senate.
