Listening to live music is a great way to relax after a stressful week of finals. There are a lot of shows you don’t want to miss this winter, so we made a list.
During finals week
Paule Turner, professor of theatre and dance, created and choreographed “Groove,” a dance pageant featuring artists Tawanda Jones and the Camden Sophisticated Sisters to celebrate diversity and culture.
According to the College of Performing Art’s webpage, “This heart-felt rhythm and blues ode to South Jersey aims to re-think the body and move the mind.”
The dance show opens tomorrow night at 8 p.m. and runs from Dec. 5-8 at Tohill Theater located in Bunce Hall. Tickets are free for students with Rowan ID. For non-Rowan students, Glassboro residents, faculty, alumni and staff tickets are $10-$15.
Also during the last two weeks of school, there are two local shows from the 4333 collective. Rich People, Nonfiction, Downhaul and The Insides will play in Glassboro this Friday at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $10.
Then on Dec. 13, Tigers Jaw and Oso Oso will perform at the Student Center. Tickets are $15. To learn more about the 4333 collective, listen to Every Whit Way’s podcast episode where Alexander Heller, Chad Wittmann and Greg Scharen sit down with Jayce Williams the founder of the collective who helped grow the music scene in Glassboro.
Just before Christmas
If you like bands such as My Chemical Romance, Taking Back Sunday and Paramore, Emo Night Brooklyn will be throwing back songs on Dec. 20 at 11 p.m. at The Foundry located at The Fillmore in Philadelphia. Note: this is a 21 and older event. Tickets are $13 each (plus service fee).
For music lovers of all ages, there are two shows in Philadelphia on Dec. 21 and you can listen to both because one starts in the afternoon while the other is at night.
From 3 p.m. to 6 p.m., Man Overboard, a pop punk band from Mt. Laurel and Williamstown, New Jersey, will be playing at the First Unitarian Church. Perhaps we’ll hear “Decemberism” and other hits before the holidays.
According to their event page, Man Overboard brought back their winter tradition known as the “Lost Tape Holiday” show. It’s their first dedicated event since 2014. Tickets are $25 (plus service fee).
After the show, grab some food and take a 15 minute Uber to Franklin Hall to see The Starting Line’s show at 8:15 p.m. They are another pop punk band from Philadelphia who performed at the Van’s Warped Tour five times including the final Warped Tour last summer.
Tickets are $32.50 (plus service fee).
After the holidays
PnB Rock, a rapper from Philadelphia, will be performing at The Met on Dec. 28 at 8 p.m. Ticket prices range from $29-$130 (plus service fee).
Then on Jan. 17, American Authors, who performed at Rowan University’s Hollybash 2016, will be playing at the Union Transfer at 8:30 p.m. Advanced tickets are $25 (plus service fee).
