Fridays and free condoms, perhaps one of the strangest combinations you will hear on a college campus.
During the fall and spring semesters, the Office of Healthy Campus Initiatives (HCI) offers free condoms every Friday from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.
Each student is allotted a bag containing five Trojan, universal size, latex condoms, along with information on how to use and put on a condom.
According to HCI’s promotion for Free Condom Friday, the group “respects the right for all people to have safe, consensual, and enjoyable sex- whatever that means for them.”
In addition to condoms, HCI and the Wellness Center also provide instructions on how to use a condom and how to turn a condom into a dental dam.
“It is important that our students have the resources that they need to be safe,” said Brittany Auleta, an HCI coordinator.
Having this support is crucial to a student’s long-term success at Rowan University. The Wellness Center emphasizes that they “care about students’ wellbeing in all aspects.”
Rowan University’s Wellness Center also works alongside FAMCare, which “offers affordable family planning services for men, women and teens; including a variety of birth control methods, pregnancy testing, and STI/HIV testing.”
Students can visit FAMCare at their Glassboro location on North Main Street, or can ask to be seen by FAMCare at the Wellness Center on Mondays and Wednesdays from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. All services provided by FAMCare are kept completely confidential.
By taking action and using resources provided through the university, students help better protect themselves from STIs and pregnancy.
“No student at Rowan should ever have to pay for condoms,” Auleta said.
For more information on Free Condom Friday and FAMCare, students can visit the HCI or the Wellness Center’s Rowan University webpage. The Wellness Center can also be reached at (856)-256-4333.
